Rod was brought up in a Reform Jewish family. He later became a Unitarian. I expect that if he learned Yiddish, it was from others in the Jewish community in his home town. Or maybe his parents knew Yiddish. I just don't know.

I was guessing they might have, although I don't know much about the Reform community in Binghamton, New York. (A rather isolated place, not too far from Cornell University, bitterly cold in winter.)

A lot of the Yiddish words are fun. I learned a few of them in college from friends who also thought they were fun.

Just don't try to use them as a secret language...everywhere you go, someone will udnerstand.

Years ago, Elektra and I were in a duty-free shop in Toronot airport. We moved quietly away as we overheard two Canadian ladies discussing in Yiddish how they were going to buy their perfume and sneak it back into the country.

i had a lot of fun pretending not to understand danish tourists, when i was a kid in germany. when i suddenly spoke perfect danish to them this 'stupid german kid' made them look like complete fools
