She's putting square brackets round them, and I know that in Pliny anything put into brackets shows as a blank, or triggers a sort of "censored" message. Unless it's a valid smiley.

Square brackets are fine in Pliny as far as I know.
Only things that people write into these 'arrow' symbols that are also the start and end of a smiley this does not show up. Pliny tries to find a smiley or other code that fits to what people write (mostly they do it with quotes) but as it can't find anything the space just stays blank.

I love the idea of every post Amy does (over a dozen here, and dozens more in the same way in other journals) being censured
That would be an impressive level of rudeness

Yes--I'm leaving a calling card in the NaJoPoMo journals (even the unofficial ones) if I don't actually have anything to say. Usually, for "normal" journals, I don't bother.

Today: most important news first. I've passed, I now have an MSc in Heritage Science
I also have a job, of sorts. I'm going to be driving Santa's horse and carriage again three weekends in December. Unfortunately, the person paying me to do it is the horse owner I've been trying to get away from, but hey, I'm young and I need the money... And it's fun watching the kids get all excited!
Still no luck getting through to either my lecturer or the supervisor for that PhD. Answering phones seems to have gone out of fashion.

I use Pliny and can see Amy's posts fine. I think it's just the angle brackets that are censured.

Well done Mala on the MSc If you do go on to do the PhD, beware the danger of becoming the perpetual student

Well done on the MSc
More letters!!! Yahay, and if you get a PhD you get to add more titles to your name not just pick your favourite. Which is sort of funky but also a bit weird..

Nothing wrong with being a perpetual student - isn't that what being a Researcher is all about?
Anyway, thanks, all - nice to think that year wasn't totally wasted, though all the recruitment agencies seem to think it only qualifies me for working in a call centre.
Found out today why my lecturer isn't responding to e-mail. Apparently, he's in Australia! Can't really send in my PhD application without his help.

I suppose being on a different continent is a fairly OK excuse for not checking email...

I don't think so. We invented this form of communication for the exact reason we can access it anywhere
But if he's on a leave diving on The Great Barrier Reef I will understand

If only email had come into use to send letters between far away universities and scientists from the start...

That seems a sort of chicken/egg situation, nosebagbadger.
I thought I'd already posted congratulations, Mala - sorry.
Well done
Clever girl! (but we knew that anyway)

Thanks, TC.
Right, long day today. Started with a visit to the GP to see about my rib, ended up on antibiotics because I'd left it too long and developed something resembling pneumonia. Bleh.
Then had an appointment at the student guidance centre to let someone look over my CV. Not sure I buy his advice to rip it apart and list work experience not in chronological order, but by relevance to the job I'm applying for.
Went into town to pick up my prescription and found a really odd little shop with fabric and craft supplies. Only place I know where you can still get coloured and patterned (tartan!) elastic to make your own braces!
While I was there, I found that one of the few outdoor shops in town is closing and everything was 25% off, plus they were accepting the 10% discount cards on top of that. So I acquired a good but expensive backpack.
Came home to find my police check thingy for the new job had finally arrived, so I was hopeful when they rang me. First, I had to answer their security questions.
"Can you tell me your date of birth and the first line of your address?"
"11th February, nineteen-"
"Is that February *Street*?"
And then they claimed they didn't have my driving licence on file, again, because it still doesn't have a paper counterpart, being a German one. I thought we'd solved that weeks ago
