Humm I think that might be your non agressive stance, and the fact that you do talk quite quitely. I've been accused of being gay and been treatened for simalar reasons. Fortunely only by small children who used to throw eggs at the "gays house" (at the time I was sharing with three gay men!)
I was also threatened once by someone about my own age, fortunately alone, on the university campus. I nearly walked into him and apolisiged, apparently there was something in my voice that sounded gay, (all of it does) and he followed me for a few yards saying, in an agressive way "Oi mate, are you queer". I felt scared and did something I'm really ashamed off, turned around and shouted as agressively as I could
"Are you f**king calling me queer mate" He looked really embarrased and aploigsied immeadiately.
Which seemed to solve in the probelm... thankfully he was about my height, and it was too dark for him to see that my size was entirely due to flab, and that I would have lost any fight I'd got into.

well, the guy who threatened me was in yates's Wine Lodge- dislikable character all round.
First of all, having walked over and started talking, informing us he "liked football violence", he tried to get me to admit to being from either Bolton or Blackburn (which I'm not). He then said "you're a pouf (I'm nevver sure how to spell that) aren't you? "
Me: "No."
Him: "well, you look like a pouf"
Me: really?
Him: Aye,a nd you sound like a pouf>"
He tehen starts jabbering away about how he's going to "kill that f***ing pouf" while his girlfriend takes him out of the pub. The barman comes over and says that if he'd started anything, they have an emergency radio link to the police, so they'd have been down immediately anyway. the barman's advice "you should have punched him. I'd've turned the cameras off".
Then, the guy was standing outside, walking around ranting. He was clearly drunk and on drugs, and then his girlfriend arrives back in the car. They then argue by the car (we're watching this, with the barmen, from inside). Then he slaps his girlfriend., gets in her car and drives off hismelf. Well, one barman gets the police on the radio, the other dashes across the pub to open the emergency exit, goes out to check the girls alright. Very unpleasant few minutes that was. Shame, because I'd been having an enjoyyable night previously.

Jordan the Spelling Demon comes to the rescue! It's 'poof'. I remember being informed of the danger (and irony) of mispelling 'proof reader' in my wonderfully judgemental primary school.
And the link isn't quite right, it doesn't work in post 42 either - it should be: -

Oh how lovely - was that by the teacher? it's poof as far as I know.. odd that that words not been reclaimed. Queer isn't really a term of abuse any more.

Mu Beta Posted Feb 7, 2004
You Subs should know better.
'Poof' and 'pouf' are both acceptable. 'Pouf' is the original, from the French 'puff' - which is probably the most authentic way of describing Ego....er, sorry, a gay man.
'Poof' is an Americanism.

Damnit!! I hate it when someone is more pedantic than me!
Yep, it was a teacher - the one in charge of special needs as well. Then again, it was about ten years ago and it was a Protestant school...

I actually missed a chunk out of that post:

If it helps, there's raving idiots in all places where alcohol is served. The last time I went to a gay nightclub, I was bailed up by a belligerent little tyke who accused me of being straight. I'm still scratching my head about that one. It might have had something to do with my dress sense on the night (conservative), my choice of drink (beer) and the fact that I'd just mentioned to my friends that the music (kylie, and other disposable pop princesses) was bl**dy awful.
Obviously, if you dress conservatively and drink beer you must be straight.

Here, there are several gay men and women I know, and if you put them all in a room, no one would know. One man is flaming, one woman is very bullish, and the rest are somewhere in between. My gaydar works simply because I've spent more time than not in gay bars. Although it works better on men for me than women. Egon, that settles it. You have to come to California, I'll meet your plane, tell you if you really are secretly gay, and you can go home.
When my oldest friend very nervously told me he was gay, I looked at him and said, "well it's about time you found out. I've known for years!"

I didn't think you were gay when I met you.
Though it goes without saying that all BCFC fans are cissies.

I always hear 'poof' said in a Scottish accent, for some reason... and I must admit, I tend to avoid Yates's Wine Lodges for the very reason that they do seem to have successfully attracted that type of bloke every time I've been in one.

I used to be in the Drama Society at University, so it goes without saying that some of my best friends are etc. etc.
So on the occasions people used to ask if I was gay I merely took it as a compliment that I was an outstanding example of modern man with enlightened social attitudes who'd got his dress sense together.
But an overwhelming interest in lower-league football, darts and greyhound racing meant I was never in too much danger of becoming the floppy-haired arty nancy boy that I might otherwise have been taken for.

One of the more interesting things to come out of this thread is that there is a "right" way to be gay, and a "wrong" way to be gay. (I still need to thin this one over).
Did any of the Brits other than Z and me watch "The A-Z of Sex"?
There were three distinct looks for the people on it. Most of the people, regardless of orientation, either wore or looked like they would be comfortable in black / rubber / leather / piercings. There was one guy (a xenophiliac) who looked like an 18th century fop. And the woman who talked about Tantra and Yoni-worship was a floaty-hippie-flowerchild.
It is almost as if you aren't allowed to have good sex unless don't look like a punk.

The gay scene is like any community of people who meet in nightclubs, there are groups of people who have their own fashions, there subcultures, its trends. I can say their is "gay music" meaning the sort of music that is fasionable at the moment.
When a young person comes out, and gets involved with the scene, it's like any group of young people, fitting in with the fashions and the
trends are important.
What I've refered to as "being gay" I should perhaps have said "Being scene" ie a regular on the gay scene.
On a PC note the word Gay, or lesbian refers to a community, an identity etc. When discussing purely the sex aspects s should refer to "Men who have sex with men" and "women who have sex with women"
Ie. a talk should be given on "Cervical cancer in women who have sex with women" not "cervical cancer in lesbains"
