I use FreeRAM XP which defrags the RAM, frees up loads of stuff and generally all round rocks!
Get it here free from download.com

*click*
OK, I've downloaded it and it says "download complete", now what do I do?
Tell me in English please.

What you've dowmloaded is an .exe file. Find it, double click on it, and it will start the self extraction process and will set itself up on your machine

You have checked the file with an up-to-date antivirus software?
No mistrust, just paranoia ...
Sorry, Greydesk aka BureauGris, if this may sound rude or impolite to you, but we all should get used to practising safer sex, ahem, *net*. Don't never ever touch a downloaded executable file without proper protection, no matter where you think to have got it from ...

Well I double-clicked on it, after it finished downloading. And up popped the usual box "select a programme to open this file"
From the list, there's no "exe" to click.
So I just clicked cancel.
Now, can you tell me exactly how to open it and get it running?
I have this problem every time I download something new, unless it opens automatically after download.
You see, I've never had a technical computer lesson in my life - I just bought this machine and more or less taught myself.

Sorry AGB it comes as a zip file, in which the exe file is encased. Double click the zip file and use your winzip (or similar) to open it. Then you can see and launch the exe file
Oh, and use your antivirus at any and every stage you fancy.

If it comes as a ZIP-archive (*.zip) and your machine doesn't know how to handle that (that's what the "select a program to open this file" message is all about) then you should get some kind of archiving/packing software. Without trying to make any endorsement for or against any kind of software, I'd recommend "winzip". An evaluation copy can be downloaded from the obvious website www.winzip.com.
I'm not familiar with the PC magazine scene in GB, but over here the software is quite frequently added to magazines ...
Get yourself some antivirus solution. If someone asks you about your current virus protection and you have to think about it for more than 1.02 seconds, then you don't have any.

OK, I have downloaded winzip, and I am downloading a free anti-virus called Norman.
I've got to go collect my grandson from his out-of-school club now though so I'll check back later how things are doing.

We seem to have clocked over 100 years of CPU time!
I just checked my stats and it said 100.023 years for the group

Congrats Marv and Jeremy! {Although I did notice you turn 900 CPU's when I checked my stats}
My pc didn't like Norman at all, and has been acting up ever since I tried to download it.
I've uninstalled it & hope it gets better soon.
