"We had the pheasants last night. They were excellent, and a perk of living in the country. There have to be some consolations, as there are hardly any other things to do here" [lanzababy]

To the rest of the world, particularly the ones who have read "Wuthering Heights," England must seem like one large barren, wind-swept heath, punctuated by Stonehenge and Dickensian London. smiley - tongueout

"I'm confused. I thought Lanzababy was in the tropics.
Where is she that has all that snow?" [Shagbark]

It was a rare tropical snowstorm that dropped warm snow on Lanzarote. smiley - silly But seriously, England (where Lanzababy is now) doesn't get a lot of snow, so it's something of an event when it comes.

Gnomon - time to move on

Here in Dublin, we're just about on the same latitude as the southern part of Alaska, but it has never snowed at Christmas here in my lifetime.

Hi, Gnomon.

Does it snow much after Christmas?

About once every two or three years we get a couple of inches of snow. But only in January or February, very occasionally in March, and once we got a sprinkling of snow as late as the 1st of June.

Pierre de la Mer ~ sometimes slightly worried but never panicking ~

thanks to the gulf stream we have fairly mild winters even in denmark while places like new york and boston are usually worse of, even if they share latitude with madrid, rome and athens smiley - geek

estonia however, which is only an hour and a half away on the other side of the baltic sea has *real* winters smiley - brr

but don't take my word for it, ask hati

smiley - rofl Ha ha! very, very true, smiley - rofl Just add in a few redundant steel and mining towns - maybe a derelict mill or too and you have the picture perfectly.
I was forced to read Wuthering Heights, and it really captures the bleakness and isolation of where I am at the moment.

My word - you were up early this morning Pierce. smiley - erm even with the hour you are ahead of GMT, that still makes it only 6.30 am that you were here in hootoo-land.

No more snow here overnight, just looks nice and clean snow, with that sort of pale blue sky and sunshine. Very pretty. smiley - brr

Br Robyn Hoode - Navo - complete with theme tune

Hi all!

It's gorgeous here! Snowed in the night, one of our roads is closed and I tried to help a chap move his car on a slight slope.

Instructions to NOT spin the wheels and to STOP revving if they do spin were completely ignored. In the end I got into my own nice warm (by now) defrosted car and quietly drove off (had to go to the chemist) with not a single slip of the tyres, turned around at the top and drove back past calling out 'try not to spin it up dear, it'll work much better!'.

I've got a stinking cold, but THAT was fun!

In icy conditions, you're better off starting in 2nd or even 3rd gear. This prevents the wheels from slipping.

I went out and bought a bag of rock salt/grit for our drive. It is fun when you live on a hill. Everything is one big icicle today, but no new snow so far. Just snow crystals - so pretty - I love it!

No one listened when I proposed that we go directly from New Year's Day into Spring. Therefore, the eleven weeks of wintry weather are not my fault. smiley - tongueout

I don't exactly love the 11 weeks of winter - but I am looking forward to the 12 days of Christmas.

The twelve days of Christmas are fine, Lanzababy. I spent years collecting the twelve Christmas china patterns that I use--one for each of the twelve days. I just store the boxes in my bedroom between Christmases.

Just came back from visiting daughter who lives on the Cheshire Plain. Over there it is +4°C. Came back up to t'moors and it is 0°C.

It's not far as the crow flies, but more a case of height above sea-level.

This is one of my favourites smiley - holly
