I so wonder how much of the site they plan to archive... Edited entries I take for granted. Possible conversations off entries. Unedited pages? User Pages? Journals and Messages? Forums? Ask? Announcments? They will have a wonderful time

Just because they're going to archive them, doesn't mean that they'll read them. Machines will do all the reading and the machines care not for our whimsy.

Thinking about it, I reckon that this conversation thread (and the many like it around here) demonstrates amply why this place works the way it does. Look past the stupidity and the idle whimsy and you'll notice that every remark and ripost is loaded with knowledge, imagination, verbal dexterity and intelligence. This site is the way it is because we don't simply tediously record raw information, we imbue it with our personalities, and treat information, knowledge and intelligence not merely as things to be respected, but to be enjoyed, played with.

Very true. Notice the wonderful absence of "FIRST!!!" posts on h2g2. That is something we should take pride in.

I'm afraid I -for some reason- have no idea what you mean, Baron. But then I am very tried and quite ignorant.

Baron Grim Posted Apr 10, 2013
Well, benjaminmoore, you see, there's this place called "the Internet". And on the internet people can post typed messages called "comments" and almost everywhere on the internet people seem to take some perverse pleasure out of being the first person to post a comment and type "FIRST". Often several of these posts will dominate the beginning of a comment thread even when none of them actually are the "first" post.
The internet is a silly place, maybe we shouldn't go there after all.

Be very glad that you haven't come across it, benjamin.
Many places, instead of people commenting the actual content of the post/blog entry/video/photo, there seems to be a competition to get the first of all comments.
That said, there is a certain pride in having snagged post 42 in the conversations in Lil's Atelier... but it's not usually something you manage to plan. And now that I think about it, there is also a rush to be first to the forum when Lil opens a new thread
. But only because the *last* to arrive is awarded with fuzzy blue trousers to be worn through the next conversation thread.

Am I the only one to think that: "hg2g (sic!) did Wikipedia before Wikipedia." significantly undersells H2G2? I reckon H2G2 did Wikipedia and Facebook before Wikipedia and Facebook (and MySpace)....
Well done all and
for all!

Well, Leif Ericson and several hundred Basque fishermen did Columbus before Columbus. It's all about who makes a commercial success of it I suppose.

It does a bit Argon0, but it also helps to draw some sort of comparison. And we're a little hard to nail down exactly what we are, because we're so eclectic
