7rob7: Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)

Hi, Della -

I've been meaning to say 'Hi' to another sf fanatic. Glad to be able to make you laugh now and then.

Twenty years ago I played the dumb tourist and went up on top of the World Trade Center. I feel really, really weird now. While I disagree strongly with the current political yahoos 'running' things here, as well as a lot of the things that America seems to choose as priorities, there is no reason whatsoever for anyone to lash out at thousands of innocents like they did today.

I am saddened for the world, for nowhere is any longer safe.

DA ; Simply Vicky: Don't get pithy with me!

It is totally unbelievable, total freakout man. I have never been to the US, but NZ is very close culturally and people here are reacting as if it was next door.. I feel stunned too - I got an email from my only friend in America (she's the only one who lives there, not my only American friend). Luckily, she's in Michigan, away from any possible trouble.. Regardless of politics, regardless of whether it's 10 or 10,000 killed, it's still a tragedy and a disaster. smiley - cat

Jimmy Nugget (I am extremely happy for everybody, especially miss Fiona.)

Actually it was closer to 100,000. We have been hearing about it all day at school in NZ.

When the plane hit the tower it was wierd. It went in, seeming quite slow and made a big hole. A few seconds later a huge fireball erupted from the building.

I think you mean 10 000. That's a staggering figure. How many kids are there in an average school?

Lentilla (Keeper of Non-Sequiturs)

No, I'm pretty sure he means 100,000. Each building was supposed to have 50,000 working individuals, and over 30,000 tourists - probably more like 160,000 people total. Hopefully there's some survivors.

It's shocking to see the footage of the Palestinians celebrating the destruction. I know that there's a lot of hatred in the world for America, especially from the Iranians for their support of Israel, but why would anybody celebrate death and desolation?

Figues used by Sky/ITN/BBC are 10,000 people in each tower at that time of day.

I have two friends who work in the Pentagon, where current estimates are as high as 800. My friends and I have sent emails (calling is out, calls back east are almost impossible) and we have had no replies. Hopefully my friends are busy helping the victims and not victims themselves.

Can I respectfully ask that the venom which is sometimes common on this thread please be toned down in future? No matter what your opinion of my country, there is a limit. When all is said and done, you are talking about PEOPLE, not cartoon figures. Thank you.

My sympathy and condolences to all people affected by this vicious and unprecedented attack on the U.S heartland. As I watched the events unfold on TV, it was at first surreal(in a terrible way), it took a minute or two to realise the this was not some fiction but real. Australia too has lost people in this tragedy.
What at first made it seem unreal, was the comments made by the reporters about the monetary value etc of the buildings with little or no concern for the 50000 possible victims. Maybe it was too painful for commentators to confront this issue at the time. I sincerely hope that the terrorists are found and dealt with appropriately!

Two Bit Trigger Pumping Moron

There are several forms of aide in the United States. There's AFDC, Section 8 Housing, the Earned Income Tax Credit, Medicaid, etc.

There is some form of a cap on some forms of welfare now. Until President Clinton [thanks for reminding me that he did at least one right thing] and Congress reformed the system we did have generational welfare. We're getting to the point now where those limits are being reached.

Flinch,

I reject your notion of socialism and the rights of individuals. Its ridiculous.

I don't deny that we've done some nasty things in during the Cold War. I don't approve of it. I think we should set the example in our conduct in peace, war, and justice.

Although, I wasn't alive during the Johnson presidency, I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize on behalf of my nation. Talk about a moron.

I wouldn't support a cut of the defense budget to support welfare. I think that welfare weakens us by removing incentive. We have a right to equal protection under law, the right to freedom of the press, the freedom of and from religion, the right to due process. I don't think we should have the right to forcibly deprive other people of their money for entitlements.

Einauni Muznobotti,

In a populated areas, our elementary schools will have between 300 and 900 students in an elementary school (ages 6-12). Our secondary schools (12-18) will generally have between 800-1200+ students.

In less populated areas, the school population varies. It depends on how many people live within a reasonable school bus drive. My wife's graduating class had about 40 students.

I thought that people might be interested in knowing that my friends who work in the Pentagon are okay, but very, very scared. A lot of their friends and co-workers are not all right. I pray the government (U.S.) will be very sure of culpability before they react. Don't like saber-rattling.

On socialism: it may make things more even across the board for the people who live under that type of system, but it also tends to average out the contributions from the people to that overall society. IMVHO

Basic human rights are something that all almost all nations accept in principle (if not practice (the USA like many other nations is guilty of ignoring human rights on occasions)). Basic human rights should have nothing to do with politics.

____________________________________________________

United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights

Adopted and proclaimed by General Assembly resolution 217 A (III) of 10 December 1948

On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights the full text of which appears in the following pages. Following this historic act the Assembly called upon all Member countries to publicize the text of the Declaration and "to cause it to be disseminated, displayed, read and expounded principally in schools and other educational institutions, without distinction based on the political status of countries or territories."

PREAMBLE
Whereas recognition of the inherent dignity and of the equal and inalienable rights of all members of the human family is the foundation of freedom, justice and peace in the world,
Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people,
Whereas it is essential, if man is not to be compelled to have recourse, as a last resort, to rebellion against tyranny and oppression, that human rights should be protected by the rule of law,
Whereas it is essential to promote the development of friendly relations between nations,
Whereas the peoples of the United Nations have in the Charter reaffirmed their faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person and in the equal rights of men and women and have determined to promote social progress and better standards of life in larger freedom,
Whereas Member States have pledged themselves to achieve, in co-operation with the United Nations, the promotion of universal respect for and observance of human rights and fundamental freedoms,
Whereas a common understanding of these rights and freedoms is of the greatest importance for the full realization of this pledge,
