I've just joined a Facebook group dedicated to unlikely cover versions. And it got me thinking.

Imagine you were in a band - as some of you may well be. What would be the cover version you played as the first song of your encore?

For no discernible reason mine would be 'MMMBop' by Hansen.

Very possibly, somewhere, there is still a demo tape of me and four other guys messing around in somebody's living room, playing 'Tellytubbies Say Eh-Oh' in 50 different genres, from death metal to piano ballad.

Failing that, the first song of our encore was always Chuck Berry's take on Route 66.

I think it'd be a toss between "Dancing Queen" by Abba, and "Wollt Ihr Das Bett in Flammen Sehen" by Rammstein. Probably segue from one to the other.

I take your point Ed, but the fact is that right now, my band are closer to The Stones in age NOW than we are to The Stones THEN.

We are the has beens that our parents warned us about.

I sing in a choral group. I don't think we do many encores unless we're on tour somewhere. When we were in Prague, I think we sang "Goin' Home," a folk song arrangement of a section from Dvorak's "New World Symphony." At Christmas concerts, we sometimes do the "Halleluja Chorus" by some guy named Handel. [We had to sing it from memory, which really strained our minds ]

I once saw Inkubus Sukkubus (a punk goth band) cover I should be so lucky by Kylie Minogue. The singer had just had a row with his girlfriend and screamed I should be so f'ing lucky into the microphone with a good deal of feeling.

If I could pull it off I'd go with that.

The most covered song used to be, of course, Louie Louie. It's been surpassed by:

"Louie,Louie?" I remember that one. One of my co-workers tiold me about a poll that was taken regarding alternatives to "Star-Spangled Banner" for the U.S. national anthem. Some people actually voted for "Louie Louie"

The pop song I've heard the most often on store public-address systems started with the words "Pick up the beat, boys, rest my soul, I want to get lost in the rock 'n' roll and drift away." Sorry, I don't know the exact words,nor the title, nor who was singing it. It's a nice song, but I got tired of it after about the fifth straight repetition of it.

Ooh, Lil! I loved that Mentor Williams song as a kid!! My dad used to listen to it on the eight-track in the car.

Love the Dobie Gray cover. The Stones did one too. Waylon Jennings, Humble Pie and John Kay (Steppenwolf) versions are all worth listening to as well.
