There is only one thing worse than being Gosho, and that is not being Gosho

Bit of a cliché, but I think I'd have to go with Teenage Kicks.

Wow, I really opened a smiley - canofworms, didn't I? smiley - erm

Nevertheless, the fact that so many artists have recorded it says a lot about how mainstream it has become.

my band plays 'Leaving on a Jet Plane', a classic folk song by Peter, Paul and Mary, from the flower-power era

..of course, we style it (not necessarily intentionally!) somewhere between 'The Who' and 'The Clash'

usually goes down a storm - loads of audience participation - you know the sort of thing: singalonga chorus, people careering round the bar with arms outstretched as planes, tears of joy from the audience that we've finally finished, etc., etc.

perfick!

PS any researchers who happen to be passing the Grove Tavern, Southbourne BH6, around 10:55 tonight (6/4/12), look thro' the window and you'll see what i mean smiley - winkeye

Bjork and PJ Harvey did a great version of 'Leaving On A Jet Plane' at the Brit Awards one time. Rather mysteriously it's never showed up on smiley - sheepTube - but here's their rather stupendous cover of 'Satisfaction' from the same event - never released because The Stones are notoriously anal about copyright. (and who can blame them: they need every penny.)

I could have sworn that Everything But The Girl covered 'Leaving on a Jet Plane'...I can hear it in my mind's ear....but Mr Google has no record of it. Possibly I'm thinking of their cover of 'The Only Living Boy in New York'. smiley - erm Which mentions planes.

Peter, Paul and Mary denied that there was any drug-related subtext. The only blot on their collective escutcheon was the underaged groupy incident that resulted in Peter's arrest and forced the group to disband. Okay, that part I'm not fond of. What I'm fond of is their music. It was a breath of fresh air blowing in the wind around my teenaged ears. smiley - biggrin

I've always liked Jefferson Airplane's White Rabbit, but you'd have to segueway it into something like Teenage Kicks, because, well, it's great.

ok, so i can now report back after last night's gig...

WE *intended* Jet Plane to be our finale, but got dragged back to do "just one more!" - oh all right then, if you insist smiley - smiley - so our encore was JJFlash

...earlier, however...

towards the end of our FIRST set, a lady of senior years (D.O.B. probably around 1920!), came and stood by the PA

she didn't LOOK like she was terribly into Rock, Blues and Soul - but, hey, who are we to judge?!?

anyway, we called her over to the mike, thinking she was going to announce it was her birthday and that all the drinks were on her, or something similar

but no - she said: "I've got the day wrong - I thought this was going to be Karaoke tonight!"

oh, go on then.... "Ladies & Gentlemen, we give you.... Helen!"

The completely unphased Helen then enchanted everyone with a sweet acapella rendition of the old Patsy Cline hit 'Crazy'

she followed up with an encore of 'Amazing Grace' (should have been Amazing Helen, in my mind)

and then dayyum me if she didn't get the biggest applause of the evening (who'd be a rock god these days?!?)

at which point the bar turned their canned music back on and so, er, that was apparently the end of our first set!

always expect the unexpected smiley - cheers

Sounds like a fun night, ALS smiley - biggrin

No one's mentioned it so I'm going to. Blues Traveler did a whole album of cover versions of their own songs called Cover Yourself, really rather good it is too.

Bludding heck!

Dick Gaughan is a bit, er, not quite the same size as when I saw him last. (Mind that was about 197cough when I was also not quite the same size either).

Gaughan tells a great story about the Seeger song...which must wait for another time.

I shall leave you with him and the divine Ms Harris:
