I was blocked by the filther the other day for using "poof".
The Eds even acknowledge it's onomatopoeic usage, and to their credit to it and put it on the "okay" list.
But by then I'd changed the wording and posted the message so I couldn't go back and edit it.
Oh - which reminds me - will nuhootoo have an "edit" function?
Please tell me it will!

No edits!
Preview is our friend.
If we fail to use it wisely we must live with our shame.
OMG! What if someone else could korrect my smelling?

Yes, edits. Sometimes we say stuff we regret. Sometimes we utterly fail to put our point across properly. Some of us actually get really bothered by our spelling and grammar mistakes.
So yes, I would like to see an edit button. Whether there will be one is another matter entirely, I'd just like it if there was. Perhaps though, just to prevent abuse of the editing function it should only be usable for, say, 12 hours after originally posting or until someone replies (whichever comes first).

For me, That's another exmple of iccream vs fruit. I'd LIKE one (available for 10 mins). I think we SHOULD stick with what we've got now.

If we had an Edit function, we wouldn't need Preview. I thought that was the whole point of Preview? Don't people use it?

No. Partly out of laziness, partly out of spontaneity and partly because I know damn well that even if did use it I'd miss out on most of my mistakes.
That said, I *would* like Edit for the ones I do spot. C'mon! It's what the rest of teh interwebs does!

Mr D's delayed edit is exactly the type of functionality that exists in board run by Ning.
The edit window is actually a lot shorter - 15 minutes. Which is plenty of time. Locking in after replies for me doesn't work either - a fast moving thread would make it ridiculous. A short edit window is I think preferable.
What this then allows is for the sudden after-thought, the amendment and especially the correct of unrealised mistakes (I for one have a blind-spot for omitting negatives - writing something *does* happen when what I meant to write was *does not* which can completely change the character of what I wrote.) Now you can argue I *should* have picked it up in preview - but what if I didn't?
Preview is a okay system but I will stand by having a time-limited edit function as a 'second chance' as 'better' becuase it allows unintentional mistakes to be corrected.

I'm not sure about an Edit button. It could be misused to flame and troll, then be hidden by editing. It would be too late, then damage would be done and the poster would stand back asking: 'What did I say?'

Indeed, true faces that appear for a time could be subject to coverings or modifyings. I prefer to leave all the warts and whiskers out there.

Isn't that what reactive moderation is about? People can "yikes" offensive posts.
Also I don't see why it isn't possible to preserve the edit versions (perhaps again with a time/limit that exceeds the edit window to conserve space) which could prevent just this sort of abuse.
I find I am less persuaded by the 'potential harm' of what a minority 'might' do than by the actual improved functionality of being able to edit what I write, which is a standard feature in some places.
Frankly I think h2g2 could do with being modernised in this way, and the worry about what miscreants could do with it doesn't actually concern me terribly.

Hence the short edit window... and what Clive said.
