And for my part I'm not particularly complaining.

But it does seem a little rum when someone complains about the affects on them of a consummation that was devoutly wished.

Obviously the idea of people having control of content they write is intolerable.

Maybe be a good idea to have a warning box appear after the reply button saying "Anything you write may be recorded and used as evidence in the court of public opinion against you".

Really people, get a grip. Edits work flawlessly everywhere I've seen them. If I write a post, I'd like the right to delete it.

Tell me, how are you going to explain the bizarre hootoo lack of control/editing to new members who in all likelihood arrive from the grown ups internet? There's a difference between "quirky" and "backwards".

Face it...this place was innovative when it started. But teh interwebs has moved on. A long way on, leaving many of the features of this place looking distinctly antwakky. The default assumption is of editing, deletions.

*And it works for everybody else!*

Flawlessly? Really?

I've seen them work well and work really badly.

I also think most places they're used aren't a community like h2 is. Most forums are just that, forums.

minichessemouse - Ahoy there me barnacle!

please please please no edit function.

with an edit function I would not have been likened to 2legs when I first joined the site as i would have seen and possibly corrected my bad spelling and grammar in my early posts.

threads here can move really quickly, sometimes you can see five posts that were written whily you yourself were posting.

Correcting mistakes wouldn't work, someone somewhere would abuse it, plus it would take away all the fun of chasing down errant letters and usung cuntinuity bleach from some forums.

please please no edit function

smiley - bigeyes Can't believe one of those spelling mistakes passed the filter for a start!

I'm also rather amused that the system for dealing with researchers who have been forced onto the naughty step, by a campaign hosted mainly off-site, is being called trolling! The system is trolling? Well, that's a classic! smiley - laugh

Mr. Dreadful - But really I'm not actually your friend, but I am...

I'm not seeing any really useful arguments against having an edit button to be bluntly honest... if the editing window is short, there can be no complete deletion of a post, an "edited by ... at ..." thingy is included AND there is a server record of the original posting I don't see what the problem is because that means the only actual scenario where Editing Is Bad (i.e. malicious posting then denying it) is pretty much covered anyway. Obviously that's a perfect world scenario but the bottom line really is this: if h2g2 doesn't move with the times, technologically speaking, h2g2 will eventually die. The only fora I've seen lately that have the same lack of functionality as h2g2 are very old and very local. We want to be fresh and global. We NEED to be fresh and global. Keeping things as they are won't help this.

There is no edit button on facebook. You can only delete your post.

No...Facebook hasn't got an Edit button as such...but if you Delete, it lets you edit.

Fresh and Global, Mr D? Well I'm certainly more global than I'd like but...(sniffs) not so fresh.

(Don't take the above as an endorsement of F/b, btw. Its UI...leaves a lot to be desired. On the other hand - they seem to be working on it.)

"There is no edit button on facebook. You can only delete your post."

That's not strictly true. If you hit delete straight away it functions as an edit button (i.e. it allows you to edit the text of the post).

Oh, and Twitter doesn't let you edit, either. It's delete or nothing.

Either way, it's more functionality than h2g2 has. Also, those are social networking sites, not forums.

Plus...it's Facebook. They like to keep a Random Changes to Functionality vibe going.

Is 'Social Network' another name for 'Community', like? Or does it only become a Community when it's rigidly policed to squash all dissent?
