that should perhaps be 'Here's a piece by Desmond Morton about the murder . . .' Mr. Morton wrote the piece, he didn't do the murder.

Do you have anything even vaguely intelligent to say Shagbark?

Thanks for that anhaga, I'll have a good read tomorrow. I had a quick look and it seemed very poignant.

Considering the context of the sensitivity of what anhaga had posted after my request, when conversation had meandered off topic I thought your post stupid in the extreme.

I should make a correction: It was my great Great grandfather who was murdered. My Great Grandfather was sixteen at the time and he just got a shotgun blast.
As for it being off topic, let me just think . . .
My great great grandfather was murdered due to sectarian strife and my great grandfather was nearly killed at the same time, something which very nearly ended the line which lead to me.
So, sectarian conflict of *exactly* the kind being discussed on this thread almost ended the possibility of my existence.
How is that off topic?

Who on earth cares if stuff is offtopic in any case, if its interesting and full of learning?
Christ I do hope this isn't an indication of how nootoo will be. Someone suddenly turning up and posting a hundred offtopic anchors.

>>I guessed Everton as Catholic because a) My family is tribally Liverpool (although I have no interest in football), b) We had Irish friends who were Everton and b) someone with a (presumed) Irish surname recently mentioned Everton on F/b<<
Everton are a Catholic side - they started life as the boys team of a Catholic church (St. Xaviers?) Liverpool were set up simply because the owner of Anfield had an empty stadium (Everton having moving to Goodison) and wanted a team to fill it.
There is seen to be a Catholic/Protestant divide between the two, but it isn't that pronounced and there's a lot of overlap: my sister is marrying into a family of Catholic Koppites. There's also historically a lot of camaraderie between the two: Toffees support the boycott of the Sun and honour the Hillsborough memorials and, although there's still quite a lot of friction because of Heysel, the general feeling is that, when the chips are down, it doesn't matter if you're Red or Blue, so long as you're a Scouser. It bothers me how bitter recent derbies have been (though this season hasn't been too bad) because we never used to be like that.
The Orange Order have been known to cause a fair amount of disruption in Liverpool: one of their marches started (for no apparent reason) and went through heavily-Catholic Bootle. Before she got sick my nan used to have a copper come to her house and have a cuppa with her because she was quite notorious for putting a brick through the Orange Order drum even in her sixties. I was quite surprised with the amount of sectarian nonsense I had to put up with when I started at my secondary school, on the whole Liverpool has never been such a divided city.

>>I'm pretty much convinced (with a few much greater Canadian
thinkers than me) that our current state is largely a product of the
fact that everyone is part of some sort of minority and no one feels
themselves to be part of any particularly strong majority.<<
So there is something positive to say about "tribalism"? I suppose
"tribalism" and "multiculturalism" are two sides of the same coin.

For one who despises anything Abrahamic, you do call on 'his' name so often, Frs
On the whole, a very interesting thread. I look forward to more events and discussions as they go.

The Everton/Liverpool divide and rivalry is not a religious one. Everton were the original club, Liverpool the illegitimate offspring.
The club that would become 'Everton' was originally a youth club or youth outreach project set up by St. Domingo Methodist Church - so neither Catholic or Protestant in origin. The team that is now Liverpool were set up as a breakaway club resulting from a dispute over the level of rent charged at Anfield. Everton moved to what is now Goodison Park, and a new club was established at Anfield.

Both teams have recruited players and managers from both Rangers and Celtic in the past. Everton's current manager, David Moyes, used to play for Celtic and the previous manager, Walter Smith, used to manage Rangers.

My general impression is that the catholic/protestant issue is pretty much dealt with in England by the classic master stroke of the ultimate fudge of CofE..and the rest is history. Henry VIII and Elizabeth I mostly sorted it. Okay a few hick-ups like a be-heading of a king..and a civil war...but these were really after shocks..
But if other parts of the UK want to waste energy fighting between themselves over such nonsense..

Same at Name Censored - no - nobody's ~really~ fighting these silly, historic issues. It's not about royal succession, transubstantiation, etc. For all these are used as totems (banners of King Billy, etc. etc.), sectarianism is a correlate of rather than the cause of underlying issue.
But back to the main point...have we now established that We Jolly Brits cannot necessarily be trusted not to get swept along in the frenzy of incitement? Granted, most of us might not - and the same is true of any nation -but all the recent evidence suggests that some do,
Or are the Scots an especially deranged subset of the British? I shall leave to to sort that one out with swl.

Oh...one more thing. Actually, Scottish (and British) Protestantism was about a lot more than the Tudors and Stuarts. Like most people educated in England, I wasn't taught about The Wars of the Covenant. Look it up! It's fascinating. 'No man shall come before me and my God.'
It was the Scots who arrested Charles I.
