Thanks all. Getting there. Lights at end of tunnel and all that. I hope to see you back again, some velvet morning when I'm straight.
Just to add some gall to the honey though...if I tend to find someone's opinions simplistic, trite and inane, then you might see that I'd find it somewhat condescending, annoying, pious and idiotic to have any disagreements attributed to my illness. So thanks an awful lot for that.

Tsch Tsch I know, I know. I'm just oversensitive. Nothing to do with any sort of condition though.

Strange, I always attributed your reactions to certain opinions as a flaw in your personality
Just kidding. I've been missing your brand of insight and intelligence. Be good to see you when you are back.
Effers, it's true that we can just avoid the troll baiting if we choose (and as you know I mostly can't be bothered with the two-sided stupidity of the god threads). But it's bloody annoying when so many of the interesting debaters are putting their energy into those threads to the detriment of other conversations.

I know that one too Maria (rarely but it does happen). But I thought your post was very insightful

Great description, Christ.

I don't quite know what you mean by 'god threads', kea. It's a term I've seen bandied about on h2g2 from time to time, but I really am not sure what people actually mean as a generic term. I think of it as a sort of h2g2 mythological term.
In terms of a thread that deals with issues that can occasionally involve discussions referring to the word 'god', I probably spend most of my time on TGDT. I have long periods away when it appears that discussion gets too dualist. But there are long periods where all sorts, varieties and aspects of human culture are discussed, all modes and manner of communication explored. It's wonderful. I've probably learned more from that thread than any other over time here. It's very complex. jwf has been a big part of late, and led the thread in many ways into all sorts of interesting areas, IMO. But you can only really appreciate that kind of thing over a longer term; it's not something to just appreciate over a coupleof pages of posts. It's a cultural thing.
I sometimes play around on the more fun 'god threads' like Jesus is coming back again. Usually in a fairly creative and fun way, often with Taff.
So really kea I don't quite know what you're on about to be honest. It sounds pretty much like a stereotypical myth to me.
I'm getting pretty fed up with this idea of stereotyping threads into categories, using derisory and contemptible labels like 'god threads'.

And, Christopher, you seemed to be suggesting the idea that spending too much time with trolls on such threads, and god botherer baiting, was the actual *cause* for problems you witnessed in relationships. IMO that's another myth.
I drink and smoke too much, but you won't ever get me blaming the bottle or the fags.

Not sure that's an accurate interpretation of the meaning behind it.
I like your idea of 'god threads' being part of a growing h2g2 mythology
but I don't feel and really can't fathom the notion that 'god threads' is
anything but a simple and concise description. Any negative value
judgment may well be in the eye of the bemoaner.
Mind you, I have never posted or even lurked at that 'Jesus' thread
you mentioned. When I see the word 'jesus', I have a reaction not
disimilar to what I imagine you must have when you see 'god'
juxtapositioned with 'thread'.
And sew...

kea said,
>and as you know I mostly can't be bothered with the two-sided stupidity of the god threads kea
If someone describes a whole group of threads as having 'two-sided stupidity', that sounds pretty negative in my book. Particularly as I don't even know what this category consists of.
It's actually ironic to put TGDT in that category of course, and it usually get's called 'The Dawkins thread'..... and of course I'm sure he'd love that considering all the shit thrown at him there of late by me. But that's what I mean. Simplistic labelling of threads or categories of threads, can sometimes mean cluck all

Sorry Effers, but I agree with the squiggly one here. I do l like the mythology idea though
The god threads to me are the ones where there's lots of talk about god. Pretty simple. It includes the low brow, troll baiting ones (where the conversation is pretty much based around that), and it includes the ones where people are trying to have an actually meaningful conversation (that sometimes includes trolling and troll baiting).

>The god threads to me are the ones where there's lots of talk about god. Pretty simple.
Fair enough. It's all a matter of perception. For me the *process* is most important. And I can't measure that very easily. It's to do with unexpected learning, impatience, stroppiness, flouncing off, new insights, new friendship...and a million other complicated things.
But if for you, kea it can all be simply analysed into a category of the threads where there's lots of talk about god...and it's pretty simple. There's absolutely nothing more I can say to you by way of communication.
