It was Len Fairclough - Peter Adamson

Elsie married Steve Tanner twice, but had a reputation for being a bit of a floozy between marriages.

Although Elsie was 'involved' with Len for many years, they never married. Len married Rita and was immediately written out of the show before Peter's trial, on the grounds that it would be upsetting for the children to still see him on TV while they had to give evidence.

Val Barlow was actually electrocuted drying her hair with a dryer without a plug (she pushed the wires into the socket using another plug), that is how the fire started. She was rushing to get ready for the Barlow's leaving 'do', as they were emigrating to Australia the following day.

Not my fault, I used to sit watching it with me nanna smiley - blush

Effers;England.

smiley - laugh Ken Barlow and Len Fairclough.

I actually haven't watched either East Enders or Corrie in years. I'm fairly bored with soaps...except I do now and then watch Holby City. I like the very silly close-ups of operations, showing weird rubbery things and blood and organs. They seem seriously funny to me.

And yes I do also like a bit of life and death angst as well, and all the shenanigens between the doctors and nurses smiley - blush

kea that's quite funny what you said about Corrie, gradually getting further and further behind. The mind boggles about how out of date kiwis' view of Britain will gradually become. smiley - laugh

You may not know, kea, but Elsie Tanner (Pat Phoenix) was the RL girlfriend of Tony Booth, father of Cherie Blair. In fact, she practices law as Cherie Booth QC.

Also...her mum used to work in the chip shop near where my mum grew up in Bootle.

I like Steve Bell's 'If...' strip in the gruaniad in which she always refers to Blair as 'Twat Boy'.'

Oh...and I saw Len Fairclough in stage performance of 'A Taste of Honey.' Do you remember he used to run the builder's yard with Ray Langton who died in a car crash - both in RL and Corrie. It's the same yard that's still going, now in the hands of Kevin Webster's dad. Ray was once married to Dierdre Barlow - who seems to be a lot more romanically successful than you'd think, considering. See also Gail Platt.

This site's brilliant:

This link is quite interesting it tells you what people on Corrie have died from going back to '61.

It says there have been 91 deaths. I'd say that's pretty good going for 50 odd years.

My mistake. Yes - Ray came back not so long ago. But I remember when Jerry Booth died. And also when Brian Tilsley was stabbed outside a nightclub.

Strangely, Brian/Gail's son Nick is a Timelord. Every time you see him, he looks different.

Best Corrie death? It's a three-way tie between:
Dereck Wilton in a car with a giant papereclip on the roof
Alf Roberts in an armchair at the centre of a New Year's Eve Party
Stanley Ogden...simply...never coming downstairs.

Around 1984is (ie the time of the Miner's Strike...does anyone remember the scab who worked as a cleaner in the factory? He was played by an actor with the wonderful name of Finetime Fontaine.

Was that Mike Baldwin's factory? I do remember much later than that, I think, some sort of strike brewing in Mike Baldwin's rag trade factory amongst the women. Actually yes, that must be much later because it featured that sex change woman, who eventually hitched up with Roy. I always liked that cute red anorak she wore.

I think she still wears it.

Have you noticed that even though she's played by a woman, she's learned the transgender trick of keeping her chin down to hide her adam's apple?

The actress that plays her has a wonderful, Northern name: Julie Hesmondhalgh. And then there was Curly Watt's wife, Raquel Wolstenhulme.
