I'm sure there are guidelines on what someone can sensibly know about certain T&C's for things. When travelling one buys tickets, travels, throws ticket away. Having to know all the rules and regs could be seen being too much info.

See if the designated area is correctly sign posted. If not how will you know?

Basically, they are trying to do everything to screw people out of cash...go by car instead next time!

I go to work on the Chiltern line, which runs from Snow Hill in Birmingham to London Marylebone. I get out at Leamington Spa, which has automatic barriers (sometimes they announce this on the train, but usually not). My home station does not have barriers but occasionally has ticket inspectors, unnanounced, checking tickets for everyone getting on or off a train. They do this standing in the stairwell area between the two platforms so if anyone did as you did, Clive, they'd get caught out too.

I'd say if you send them a copy of your bank statement, clearly marked to indicate the purchase of the tickets along with all the details of what happened. Given that the fare is quite low and the fact that you haven't done this before, I'd be surprised if they consider it worthwhile pursuing.

The cost of parking in Sheffield is greater than the cost of the rail fare.

Also the area of the inspection was the underpass between stations, if that's relevant.

Ah that raises are interesting though Elentari,

Is this my opportunity to present my bank statement? I'd figured they were asking for my explanation not my evidence.

That sounds like a public area. Do you need a ticket to access that area?

No...not normally.

You can go to the other platform and see off family without a ticket.

Without reading the letter I couldn't say, Clive, but it couldn't hurt! The sooner you convince them you're telling the truth the better! smiley - goodluck

I can't see how tickets can be 'checked' if they are not needed to access the area where you were. Surely, admitting that you had in fact just got off a train is evidence of your good faith. (Had you been going to lie it would have been easier to say you'd seen somebody offsmiley - winkeye

Yep - if they're after mitigating factors, they're asking for an explanation and already assuming that you're at least technically guilty.

However, I'd say that sending the bank statement at the earliest opportunity is worth doing.

"the burden of proof is on you."

I'm not sure that's right - I think this is a civil case, not a criminal case.

<< I think this is a civil case, not a criminal case.>>

if it goes to court and you produce the bank statement, you can also ask them to produce the purchase reciept showing what you purchased

they will look foolish and you will get dissmissed and they end up with the costs

The relevant portion of the letter begins, "All the evidence available is being considered" - I wonder if they ever did ring ahead to Nottingham and have someone intercept the bin upon arrival at the terminus. I did after all tell them exactly where my ticket was.

smiley - winkeye

If they didn't - 'can I have 'insufficient investigation' added to the list?

Taff, the ticket was bought out of a machine. If there is an internal record of receipts I never get to see it.

clive there must be a record of the transaction if it was a machine/card transaction, the accounting dept. would'nt have it any other way

you told them about it so they should check it

they want you to do the job for them and will still ask you to pay them for the privilage

this is a bluff, just call it

they have the evidence, its just too much effort for them to find it

Clive, I'd just write back and reiterate what you told the ticket inspectors:

1. You bought a ticket.
2. You have a receipt or bank statement to prove it.
3. The ticket was inspected on the train.
4. You binned the ticket when you left the train.

Offer to send them copies of the bank statement or till receipt if they require it.

Leave it at that.

What Icy said, but include a copy of the bank statement / till receipt.
