You'd probably find it a lot easier if you adopted the approach of the majority of Christians Stanley and accept that the Bible was intended to be allegorical and not literally true in every sense. It's a morality tale which in no way takes away from your belief in a god.

Do you think there was actually a prodigal son? Was your Jesus recounting a true event or was he telling a story to illustrate a point?

Of course, it was the latter and that's what the Bible is all about. It's about conveying complicated concepts in a simple and easy to understand way. It's basically a rule book with stories to illustrate why the rules are "necessary". You're tying yourself in knots trying to prove that the stories are fact when that really isn't required.

It's a bit like trying to prove the science behind Star Trek is real in order to hold up Roddenbury's vision of the future as a viable possibility. But the science in Star Trek is just a plot device to take the story forward.
