Google is my friend:

It was among the top hits, I didn't even have to specify which site.

Help - I'm looking for the thread where SoRB "proves" the Star Trek universe is Communist.

Do you know what, I believe for the first time in this thread, we've had this one before. I could be wrong.

#8, scroll down past his theories about LotR and Star Wars and we get to:
"Star Trek:
Starfleet is a communist military dictatorship which uses the cover of the United Federation of Planets to give it a veneer of respectability. However, they control all access to space - NOBODY in Star Trek owns their own ship, everybody gets about on Starfleet vessels or government owned passenger ships. If you're not Starfleet, you're little people. Starfleet is able to declare martial law on Earth at the drop of a hat."
And this was later "discussed" here: F1811595?thread=450171

Well, I always thought there was something fishy about a being who was thought to be extinct and only exist as fossiles to turn out to actually live and even breathe

Clearly you haven't seen Patrick Moore.

Someone (it may have been Lanzababy) was asking for suggestions for an American tourist coming to Europe. It was most likely in "ask". Can anyone remember what it was called? Was probably about a year ago.

I think I may have revived it in July or August this year, just before the holiday was planned, to ask if it was taking place. It might have been May, though. And I'm not even sure now if it was this year or last year.

Started by lanzababy in January 2010, and you revived it in July 2010 to ask if the trip was happening.

Thanks, Coelecanth.
We really will have to give our threads less misleading titles, although that wasn't really very misleading. Now I've got to find the thread I was going to post the link to!

There was a thread, that ~jwf~ either started or was just an early contributor, that was about ideas for h2g2 researcher names. I don't remember when it was started, or when the last time I saw it was. I do know it's been awhile.

I know this isn't the thread you mean, but it's quite fun. Ideas for Gaullish/Asterix researcher names. F19585?thread=6729175
Then there's "What would your Darth name be?" at F19585?thread=6733422 which also isn't the one you want, but worth a look.
Can you recall any other details Amy? Even just some other people who might have posted to it, or for roughly how long the thread was going - ie was it a long standing thread that fizzled out, or was it a short one that never really got going?

I do know it ran into hundreds of posts (don't think it made it into thousands, but I could be wrong). I'm positive it started out as a thread about name suggestions for newbies, as opposed to something that evolved into that. (I'm also pretty sure the thread name reflects that.) Some of the names were punny. It was definitely in Ask. I'm not absolutely certain who all posted in it, because it's been quite a while (unfortunately, I don't remember how long a while). I know I posted in it, and pretty sure jwf did, as I said earlier. Peet, maybe. Maybe Pinniped. I think most of the posters were Ask regulars of the time, because I don't remember being surprised to see anyone in it.
Not a lot of help, I know If I get time, I'll comb my MP pages, since I never unsubscribe from anything.
