Esther=Ishtar
Mordecai=Marduk
I am sure that is all quite relevant on a certain level, i.e. the Historic accuracy of the Allegory, but I haven't read the story of Ishtar and Marduk, therefore could not refer someone to it for the purpose of attaining a meaning that I had picked up on.
Jesus is coming back. Get ready!

'I have been told that they are all pretty much rooted on the same ideas.'
I don't think you've been misinformed at all, docsharp. I spent a long period of my youngsterdom studying the works of Mercia Eliade (now much maligned and ignored due to his fascist associations in his youth, but I think in the realm of Comparative Religion his work is very important. It is on Eliade's giant shoulders that Joseph Campbell sits). One thing I learned from Eliade is that, like Rock and Roll, Human Religion is one big song. What I've always felt in my gut, however, is that it is humanity, not any god, which is singing that song.
As a metaphor, if you find pyramids in Central America and you find pyramids in Egypt and you find no evidence of communication between the two areas, what is the more reasonable conclusion? There's something about human nature which impels us to build artificial mountains, or, flying saucer people landed in Cairo and Palenque, taught humans the civilized arts, and used anti-gravity devices to move stones about.
Do you see my point?
Jesus is coming back. It could be sooner than you think!
Noggin the Nog Posted Feb 21, 2009
Ishtar and Marduk were Babylonian gods, doc. The use of the names illustrates the degree of connection between Judaism and its contemporary religions.
Can't actually remember the original point.

'Can't actually remember the original point.'
I thought you, of all people, Noggin, realized by now:
There is no original point. We each have to make our own point.

Anhaga,
1.>>There is no original point. 2.>>We each have to make our own point.
1.)The popular belief is that these stories were all allegorical, if we do indeed reincarnate then the reader of an allegorical story will pic up on the meaning of the writer if he is the same person reincarnated.
Jesus to the assembly of Jews,
here we have Jews that say they are Jews but lie, if you were really the sons of Abraham you would here the words of Abraham.
Which pure fluke of course is along the lines of what we have been discussing, it also demonstrated some understanding of Genetics,
2.)I whole heartedly agree that we all have to make our own point.
Jesus is coming back. It could be sooner than you think!
anhaga Posted Feb 21, 2009
I was joking about there being no point more generally -- like, to life itself -- not specifically about Bible stories.
I'm not clear on what you're saying about the Jews and Abraham and flukes and genetics.

As I expect you all know, the anti-Christ (dajjal) will precede Jesus' return. Here are the major signs of the appearance of anti-Christ, who is the final, BIG false messiah:
People will stop offering prayers
Dishonesty will be the way of life
Falsehood will become a virtue
People will mortgage their faith for worldly gains
Usuary and bribery will become legitimate
Imbeciles would rule over the wise
Blood of innocents would be shed
Pride will be taken on acts of oppression
The rulers will be corrupt
The scholars will be hypocrites
Adultery will be rampant
Women will rub shoulders with men in doing business
Women will dress like men, and men will dress like women
The liars and treacherous will be respected
There will be acute famine at the time
Peace be with those who follow Divine guidance.

People will stop offering prayers – Secularists abound at the moment.
Dishonesty will be the way of life - well, only with MP's, banks, iffy business people and religious leaders
Falsehood will become a virtue - religions
People will mortgage their faith for worldly gains – if you haven;t got faith you can't mortgage it.
Usuary and bribery will become legitimate – Lordship, sir?
Imbeciles would rule over the wise – Dubya Bush, Blair, various Imams.
Blood of innocents would be shed – always has always will.
Pride will be taken on acts of oppression – hmmm, Isreal/Gaza, men over women(Islam)
The rulers will be corrupt – always have been, always will
The scholars will be hypocrites – which scholars? religious? (*cough* child abuse, marital affairs)
Adultery will be rampant – well, adultery has always happened but that's down to evolution.
Women will rub shoulders with men in doing business – OH HORROR!!!! Get over it Muslims
Women will dress like men, and men will dress like women OH HORROR!!!! Get over it Muslims
The liars and treacherous will be respected – always have, always will.
There will be acute famine at the time – always has been always will

And Warner how are we supposed to recognize dajjal. I heard he will only have one eye. That would give him a bit of a problem with depth perception wouldn't it? The bible talks of many Antichrists, these would be dajjal's acolytes. There are thousands of people like that around. This is the world that we live in......as said previously by 3Dots, get over it.

It's OK noggin, I've just had someone accuse me of being him before. How popular is thinking that you are either Christ or the Antichrist amongst schizophrenics, very popular in my experience.

I guess it's not time yet.

>>Women will rub shoulders with men in doing business<<
This is my favourite as it tells us everything we need to know about warner. Of course, women should stay at home until they're married to their cousins and then they should stay in his home. Perish the thought that they should look after themselves.
>>Blood of innocents would be shed<<
This is advocated several times in the Bible and the Qu'ran. It's carried out in the name of religion all over the globe. You yourself advocate beating innocent children - it's not much of a leap between that and bloodshed.
>>There will be acute famine at the time<<
3Dots says this is always the case, but at the moment it's not true. There's no particular food shortage. There was a scare last year because the major food producing nations had raised export tariffs and restrictions, but that's it. Last year's yields were good and many of the poorer nations have been stockpiling wisely. There's always basket-cases like the DR Congo and Zimbabwe, but that's got nothing to do with the presence of the
>>Pride will be taken on acts of oppression<<
You've stated proudly that you beat your sons and mentally abuse your daughters. How is that not oppression?
warner, name a date. When's your little scary man going to show his face? WG started this thread nearly 5 months ago saying a long-deceased Gallilean carpenter's son was coming back *imminently* - where is he?
You said that a person who denied the existence of Satan would be punished straight away, along with their family and nation (wouldn't that include innocents?) and two weeks later, here I am with no ill-effects.
Your magical fairies could have solved this easily and long ago by showing themselves. They haven't. Do you know why? Because they don't exist.
You've been lied to warner, lied to by stupid people who, instead of confronting their inadequacies, try to get folk even stupider and more gullible than they to believe it. You're amongst intelligent people here, no-one is going to be taken in by your backwards superstitions.

Yes, that's interesting isn't it! I wonder what the sequel is going to be. The complete and utter division between nations and "classes" is becoming alarming, and now we see a serious collapse in the banking system, which just a week ago we were advised by a senior cabinet minister that it would be worse than the "30's".
Some countries are already seriously feeling the "pinch", and others are expected to follow, as can be seen from the recent G20 meeting this week. [G20 seems to lead nowhere]

It's been two hundred generations since Jesus died.
In every one of those generations there were people filled with the childish vanity that 'It's all about me! It's going to happen to me!'
The world keeps turning and the sun keeps rising and the rest of us get on with our lives.
Jesus is coming back. It could be sooner than you think!
anhaga Posted Feb 21, 2009
Yes, the world's a basket case, as predicted. It's all going to end horribly and there's nothing we can do to fix it, as was predicted. So, we have to give up on the world and our fellow humans. It's beyond our control. All that's left is to quickly convert to Judeo-Christian-Islam and take our preordained place beside God in this world of free-will.
No. I'd rather light a single candle than curse the darkness. We will get through this and life will continue to improve over the generations *if we take responsibility* instead of lamenting 'God's will be done.'
