I think the point is that students feel utterly smiley - bleeped. Yes I'm sure when Nick Clegg et al had the pics taken on campus with students, holding up their signed pledges, they thought, 'oh no-one is going to have much sympathy for this bunch of layabout, beer drinkers'..we can even go so far as to actually do this...not just lie in speeches or literature..no we Lib Dems will actually sign these pledges, and have our photos taken with students on campus, buy their votes..and smiley - bleep them...Joe Average won't give a damn for them.

I just heard a Scottish Lib Dem interviewed on 5live. She's voting with the government to smiley - bleep the English students..smiley - cool

Oh I'm sure they do. But what they feel and what is reality are two rather different things. I guess actually understanding the issues is less fun than a day out in London.

And as for the LibDems, I'm sure if they'd won the election they would have done those things. But they didn't, did they? Because not enough people voted for them.
They ended up as junior partners in a coalition. And as part of the coalition have managed to make the new legislation better than it would have been.
But no, even that is too complicated for the agitators. Binary, blinkered politics is all they want and all they'll end up getting.

>I'm sure if they'd won the election they would have done those things.<

smiley - snorksmiley - rofl Oh yeah everyone who voted Lib Dem this time thought, 'oh I'll vote for them based on what they say, do and write because they might win the election'..

That's so utterly laugable..they haven't formed a government ever as LIb Dems..and not in nearly a century as Liberals. Everyone who voted for them, myself included, did it because they might hold the balance of power. This cr@p about only pledging if they won is just that..cr@p. Everyone knows it, how many times they say it.

What people will always remember now is that the Lib Dems went so far as to have the photos taken with signed pledges, and cynically renaged for a sniff of power.

I hope they get wiped out at the next election. People I know, say they would sooner vote Tory than Lib Dem ever again.

They've made the biggest monkey of democracy ever.

Labour introduced fees. The Tories and the LibDems have increased them.

Who can those who want something for nothing vote for now?

and there we have exactly the misunderstanding I was talking about.
*shakes head* We had a chance here, but you're just too blinkered to see it.
anyway, I've made my point, this isn't really the place for any such discussion so I shall leave it now.

OK so I am biased as a PhD student, on the other hand my fees are paid for me so the bias isn't that strong. I just don't get though how the government intends to stop graduates simply starting bankruptcy proceedings when they graduate.
Also I think it is unfair to say this is only students being self interested, as I understood it it will apply to new students not to current ones.

Well put Icotan. However, as a lifelong Liberal / Lib Dem voter, I am left wondering if I can ever vote for them again. The bigger picture is of them climbing into bed with a party that were not our natural allies. I understand why they HAD to in the interests of representation of the greatest number of voters, but it does stick in the craw.

However, today's BIG news? Alan Pardew loses his marbles. What was the man thinking of?

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/teams/n/newcastle_united/9273388.stm

Oh no. Hang on! Five and a half year contract? Big pay off in the summer then when he gets sacked for not doing any better than Chris Hughton then.

To apply for bankruptcy would be incredibly daft, showing a complete lack of understanding of the consequences. Oh.

At least he didn't lose 3-1, nor did he get his last team out of the Championship and into the Premier League.

why are the students Revolting!?!

http://www.factsonfees.com/

you get 15 years of education that you spend the rest of your life paying off several times over in the form of tax

if you want further education that might land you a top paying job, its only fair you pay for that,

those that don't go to uni, don't pay their fees, why should they pay for someone else as well?????

New rules for Formula 1 cars.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/motorsport/formula_one/9275796.stm

"The aim is for the new rules to improve the efficiency of F1 engines by as much as 50%."

Good. I've long thought that car manufacturers are supremely capable of producing far more efficient cars but have lacked the incentive to do so. IMHO if govt passed a law tomorrow limiting all cars to 1000cc and/or 100g/km CO2, manufacturers would rise to the challenge.

'The rare thorn tree had ties to the early days of Christianity and pilgrims often left offerings at its base. . .

. . . British police want to know who sawed off the historic limbs of the Glastonbury Holy Thorn Tree, reducing it to a stump.'

Well, I find this to be a bloody offensive act.smiley - cross

Certainly it's a vestige of a silly religious myth, but it is also a piece of history, and it is a very fun silly religious myth and a religious myth that runs through English Literature. There is nothing better for a young student of Medieval English Literature than to travel to Glastonbury and visit the thorn.

Of course, they'll be able to bring it back with a graft, but still . . .

It brings to mind a similar incident of madness, involving Kiidk'yaas, a little closer to my home:

Sadly our young students are now involved in vandalising the Cenotaph, so it seems not inconceivable that one of them was also responsible for this act of vandalism as well.

To me it's only worth mentioning rather than spending an extra 2 minutes digging up a link (somebody else may), but this was interesting to see down at the bottom of my telly: Jim Morrison of the 60s San francisco originated musical group 'The Doors', died prematurely a long time ago, has been pardoned of a public indecency charge--exposing himself onstage. Who on Earth bothered to make that into a cause worth fighting for? Hilarious!
