I watched Journey to The Centre of The Earth, the other night.
Probably great for kids but some cringe worthy lines and faux-family shmaltz.
Standing over the shallow grave of his father, his uncle reads out a diary entry of the dead man to his teenage son stood weeping over the scarcely concealed body.
"here I am trapped at the centre of the earth wit no way back to you my boy - on this your birthday. I know you;l grow up bright and strong, my son and some day you'll be a man..."
"Happy birthday, Max" said Brendan Fraiser soulfully in one of the most emotionally confused scenes of the entire movie.

Most people tend to think it was a pretty good film, and those of us who watched the original TV show, Firefly, tend to hold it even dearer.
I'd stick to Matrix 1, myself. I tend to ignore the existance of 2 & 3 where I can.

Clearly we depart over our taste in movies as in other things. C'est la vie.
It's hardly post-2000 but I'll always recommend Dr Strangelove to anyone.

How about Eternal Sunshine of The Spotless Mind - that's kind of sci/fi dramery - post 2000, compelling story, good acting.
Adaptation - another funny one with a literary bent
Being John Malkovich - head portals, yes I think that counts as sci fi....
All excellent.

she forms but one third (or one quarter of the cast depending on your point of view - you'll see what I mean when you watch it) so she is at least equalled by Chris Cooper and Nicholas Cage (in about the only movie I can stand to watch him in - who knew he could act after 60 Seconds, and Ghostrider? Shock! )
