I read a review of the book when it was published and was intigued but didn't get around to reading it. I read previews of the TV programme and thought 'Ooh, I wanna watch that!' but ended up doing something much more fun than watching telly.
I really do have to see it at some point.
This isn't a film but last night I watched the first two episodes of 'The Martian Chronicles'. I haven't seen them since they first aired (I was about ten and it went right over my head) but, despite, the clunky 80s effects, it's still rivetting stuff. Mind you, the source material wasn't too shoddy!

I recently saw The Last King of Scotland which is about Idi Amin the Ugandan dictator who retired to Saudi Arabia with his ill-gotten gains. An effective take on of paranoia, xenophobia, persecution, greed and meglomania as seen through the eyes of a young doctor.

>The Black Dahlia - lost interest after about ten minutes and didn't really follow the rest. Umm, can't really comment. Not sure whether this was the film's fault or mine, but I think it ought to share some of the blame.<
Yes, I tried this on Sky movies a couple of days ago and we turned over after about half an hour. Dull dull dull.

"I now pronounce you Chuck and Larry"
I can't remember when I last laughed so much. Watch out for the cameos, and the famous-in-disguise (it's a Dennis Dugan film) and the bit part from Dan Aykroyd completely stole the show for me. Got a shock when I spotted Richard Chamberlain, I thought he had died years ago, to check IMDB: nope, still alive.

One of my all time favorite lines:
"[Burt Gummer, with his wife Heather at his side, berates the dead monster fought off with their "family arsinal"]
Burt Gummer: Broke into the wrong G** D*** rec room, didn't ya you bastard!"
The "Memorable Quotes" at imdb deserves an award all by itself ...

Tremors - The Redneck Dune
Saw Superbad last night. A lot of fun, low-aiming but very funny. The kids involved have a lot of talent.

Awesome! looks a hell of a lot better than that ben stiller appallingness. That just looks dull and annoying tbh... At least superbad looks like it might be worth the time. Though I didnt like Napoleon Dynamite and everyone raved about that...

I watched The Illusionist last night on DVD. I didn't think it was much cop. The Prestige was much better.

"The Lives of Others".
Wanted to watch this film for a while, in fact ever since it beat "Pan's Labyrinth" to the foreign language gong at the Oscars this year.
Whilst I perhaps did not enjoy it quite as much as that one (pans probably being more my kind of film) I thought it was an absolute humdinger of a film and I see now why it got the gong.
The sense of dread and rising suspense is palpable, and (without giving to much of the plot away) the transformation in the characters is totally believable.
I would heartily recommend this film to any one.

I was not that impressed with Pan´s Labyrinth. The fairy tale was not that original, and neither was the real life part. Too dark to be escapism, and not original enough to make an interesting movie.

oh I still haven't seen the German film yet - I think I'll get it on DVD
This week I have seen:
-Ratatouille - laughed a lot but rats! in a kitchen! yeuch
-Short Circuit (bought 5 DVDs for €5 in Holland this week) - the Gruesome Twosome loved it (and I remembered the Steve Gutenberg thread thing off here and wanted to look for it)
-Bridge to Terebithia (sp?) - most excellent but it made Gruesome #1 cry (she's a soft lass)
-The Full Monty (was just on TV) - made me homesick for Sheffield
-Archangel - I loved the book, but you can't get all that detail in a film so I prefer the novel. But Daniel Craig more than made up for it
-Die Wilden Hühner - German kids film. The Gruesomes loved it, and it handled young teenagers discovering the opposite sex in a humerous and gentle way (and it didn't dominate the plot - which was about chickens)

Sounds like I'll not be watching the gong-winner... If it builds tension and dread, I'll not enjoy it! *hides behind the sofa*
*peeks back out to watch Shoot em Up cos it's hilarious*

I saw Deathwatch on the telly over the weekend. Good film I thought, 'specially in view of the fact the main character was in "Billy Elliot".
