After having watched the violence porn that is Audition I don´t think I will be watching anything by that guy again. Oldboy however was a good movie. There was more of a reason for the violence and gore And Happiness of the Katakuris is odd, but not interesting.

I can't place BR and Tetsuo in the same register, at all - simply not comparable.
BR is just a great basic premise, well executed as an eminently watchable movie.
Tetsuo Iron Man was an arduous, exhausting visual nightmare - the only moment of 'enjoyment' coming when it ends!
In my humble, of course,

An opinion that you're perfectly entitled to, my friend. Tetsuo is one of those movies that divides it's audiences into love it or hate it camps.
Rather like brussel sprouts, I suspect it's to do with the chemicals.

Saw The Golem last night - as per recommendation a fantastic film. Beautifully shot, it's amazing what they were capable of 87 years ago.
The print was good but the soundtrack CD skipped frequently which was frustrating, but not enough to ruin it entirely. In the discussion afterward one lady gave it the big I Am with her understanding of Expressionism, then panned it for being anti-semitic; a view she held on her own. Then another lady with considerable insight put it into its proper historical context and made a lot more sense of it for everyone. The course is going to be fascinating but more so to see how the power-play between these two is going to pan out.
But a fantastic film which anyone should see if they get the chance. Great cast, stunning use of light and shadow - incredible set design for its time, and the Rabbi's Daughter. Yes.
Next week, La Belle Et La Bete (Cocteau, 1930)

A film I'd very much like to see, but unlike some of it's better known 'contemporaries' (Nosferatu, Vampyre etc), it is a lot less common.

We rented "La Belle Et La Bete" from Netflix several months ago. I absolutely LOVED it!!
The visual effects (and I won't ruin them) are quite stunning. Dark, haunting, beautiful. It's available from Criterion, so I may have to add it to the collection.

Good morning PCandy.
I'm waiting impatiently for Pan's Labyrinth and Last King of Scotland to open here in Memphis.

Hi JEllen! "Pan's Labyrinth" ws released here in Chicago on December 29th and is playing a limited release in two theaters. One of them is located not far away from my home. Unfortunately, my work schedule has not been conducive to planning a trip to the theater. Hopefully we'll make it and won't have to wait for a DVD release.

i've seen OLDBOY very disturbing film but i always felt the ending was the only thing he could do, without justifying it of course...
we saw NACHO LIBRE the other night... we liked it a lot, could see the NAPOLOEON DYNAMITE influence [same director] very funny in a dry way... i'd give it 8-9/10...
my daughter keeps on about battle royale.. says i must see it... anyone give me a brief idea about it???
psychocandy enjoy PANS LABYRYNTH...

Speaking of old movies, I once attended a cinema screening of many old George Meliés movies hosted by his grand daughter. I would also recommend those, amazing what the guy could do with special effects considering he was one of the first people to ever make movies.

That's the one I was referring to also- the Cocteau film from 1946. It was gorgeous.

I went to the cinemas with my girlfriend and allowed her to pick the film. Always a bad idea.
Hse picked "The pursuit of Happyness"
There was some good news and bad news.
It was sold out
Obviously the bad news is that box office like this will encourage more people to put the gurning bufoon Will "Willenuium" Smith into more films
Instead we watched Smoking Aces. It was a good film with two twists in the tale. One was cleverly worked into the film so had an effect on your appreciation of the action when it was revealed the other made me just go "oh" as it was a character we didnt know it didnt matter that he was pretending to be someone he wasnt.
In "The Departed" you got to see how hard it was for Matt Damon's and Leonardo DiCaprios@s characters to be someone they weren't.
It was a good film lots of characters some more realistic than others and some neat dialogue. If you liked "Pulp Fiction" you'll enjoy it.

Is this still "Smokin' Aces" you're talking about? I ask because I've not seen any reviews, but I'm not convinced by the publicity I've seen so far (admittedly, this is less-than-informative posters on the Tube).
Anyone seen "The Last King Of Scotland"? Any good?

finally saw CHILDREN OF MEN always a problem for me to see films over 12a due to littlun, so we have to wait till they come out on dvd..
we were both very impressed, couldn't really understand the whole hide the girl away thing, surely it was practically a miracle.... and what a bleak future... can't see the immigration thing turn out like that either.. perhaps the film needed more explanation... quality acting and fantastic futuristic cities/slums on a huge scale... wonder if computer graphics were used...
tonight we have tallegada nights so will let you know my verdict...

I saw Last King of Scotland last week.
Forrest Whittaker for best actor Oscar.
It's absolutely brilliant. Hilarious and terrifying, as one would imagine.
