A Conversation for Ask h2g2

I recently put two entries through PR because I thought I should have something to show for being here 5 years. Having said that, the last 3 years have been spent partly doing research for a Uni of Life project on Somerset's history. When it eventually sees the light of day (it would be just my luck if that's the day they pull the plug ), it should add another 40 odd entries unless I do some drastic editing in the meantime.
What does concern me is that if you go to the BBC homepage and click 'see full directory' next to the 'Browse' header, the h2g2 site is nowhere to be seen. You have to search under A-Z to find it. That seems to show a lack of long term commitment to us if they can't be bothered to add h2g2 to the site directory.

40? They'll have to have a very long front page to list them all!
That is strange about the BBC page. Are the eds reading this thread? If so, anything you can do?

Good idea doing it that way round - there was a case recently with someone who thought her Uni essay would make a good W*k* entry, so she put it on there - sadly before the prof got around to reading the essays, he says she just stole it from there!
And that is strange. We need a smiley for protesting.

When I was at uni one apparently odd seeming essay lead to a *major* cull of my fellow students. About a third disappeared over night. I'd plagiarised *mine* from the back of a cd case so was ok.

We're pretty certain it doesn't mean that! We couldn't find out why we weren't in the directory apart from reasonable speculation that they didn't know where to put us. It's in the A-Z index though, and reassuringly this gets overwhlemingly more traffic than the directory.

That's the sort of active participation from TPTB that we don't see as often as we used to... Cheers for the reply though!

>>>Have you let them know where to put us?
Of course. We made a suggestion but things don't happen that quickly, if at all. Also, there's some debate apparently about what might happen to the directory in the future. We'll keep talking and keep pushing as we've always done.

How about asking TPTB to sneak a link on to the Radio 4 Dirk Gently page that is up at the moment.

I've nearly finsihed my Guide entry on Eoin Colfer. It just needs spell checking! WooHoo my first guide entry!

Suggestion:
Since there are now thousands of Edited Guide entries, and we know that many are better than others, why don't the eds and subs go thru all the old ones and elevate the very best examples to a new stature of: "Edited Edited Guide Entries" or some other funkily named status.
I'm not suggesting for a moment that any of the lesser quality entries be scrapped or deleted for they are our legacy. But let's face it, there are by now thousands and thousands of lesser quality entries. As such, these less than stellar entries are discouraging to new readers who may decide from reading too few examples that the Edited Guide on the whole is over-rated as a resource tool.
So why not do a selective re-edit of all Edited Guide entries to date and make a new Super-Edited-Edited-Guide that sustains the levels originally intended for this site.
I would suggest that all researchers could nominate entries which they believe best fulfill the original h2g2 mandate. But I also recognise the tyranny of democracy and stop short of suggesting some sort of voting system. I think we know all too well that some researchers have fan clubs that would nominate or vote for anything by their favourite researchers.
Anyway, for starters, perhaps a jury of our Peers could begin taking nominations for the best of the Edited entries.
