Edward the Bonobo - Gone.

Great opening lines:

'The sweat wis lashin oafay Sick Boy.'

A friend's wife read it, at the time when (despite Vickey's perception of it as an Arts Council funded niche novel), *everyone* was reading it. She couldn't figure out who was this character 'Masel' was. As in,
'So ah said to masel...'

It took me ages to work out why the police are called Labdicks - I was wondering if there was a particularly good forensic science department in Edinburgh smiley - smiley

I know the film better then the book - the judge described Renton as quite bright, and it's Renton they all turn to to say something when the baby dies. (His immortal eulogy: 'I'm cookin' up!')

>I thought crucifixion was the *Romans* preferred method of torture and torment.<

I was speaking theologically, Nog. Of course I know it was the Roman method. I was meaning that the Father in Heaven selected that for son in order to maximise the torment and suffering of his death, because as Gif pointed out, there is the idea that the more Jesus suffered, the more our sins are forgiven.

Quite a lot of conversation for a piece of subsidised, elitist literature, no? smiley - smiley

Tsk. I dated a Glaswegian. I've always assumed Weegie = Glasweegiean (though I suspect it may mean 'drunken Glaswegian thug', in which case I didn't).

Thank goodness for elitist literature, that's what I say. Good job those working-class oiks don't read anything other than The Sun.

Did you ever get a Glasgow kiss?

No - Weegie is any Glasgow resident. The drunken, thuggish variety are 'neds'.

It probably still counts as misegenation, though.

For one thing, it made me read The God Delusion. I'll have to get a copy of The Selfish gene, too.
