Rangers, Bountys, Guardian Angels? What is going on?
creachy Posted Jan 26, 2004
that does appear to be the problem yes. a fairly grey area it appears by reading this thread.
but, i wouldn't class H2G2 as a message board/forum. i've always thought of it as it says on the front page, 'The Earth edition of the Guide to life the universe and everyting'.
i do believe the problem is stemming from a user who has transferred from a message board site to this one and is yet unaware of the massive difference between his ex/other site and this one.
it is possibly better to treat him as someone going thhrough a cultural shift, and be patient and calm
or perhaps clearer guidlines/rules could be put in place.
something like 'Only officially endorsed groups may welcome new users under an organisation name.'
that way any researcher could still post to any other researcher, newbie or not, but 'unofficial' groups would now be able to be punished under the spamming rule with clear definition.
that's just a quickly thought up idea but something to ponder on.

Creachy.. actually i would class this as a forum/msg board, it isnt at a chatroom, you leave msges for ppl to answer when they can.
And anybody can welcome Newbies, as long as they point them in the right direction of say an Ace/Guardian Angel.

I'm for the first suggestion - but then again, I'm a bleeding heart liberal leftist nut, so there...
I'm just not sure whether "unofficial" welcoming boards could or should be banned. Don't know how it works these days, as I haven't been ACEing for years, but the G.A. used to make a valuable contribution...
And I think there's a widespread resentment in the community about what is felt as an everincreasing level of restriction, since the BBC takeover, something I fear imposing new rules could worsen dramatically.
And last, but not least, I think we should take pride in the fact that we are able to have a generally peaceful and pleasant community, that's mainly selfregulated.
Would anyone mind terribly if I left this guy a message, asking him to pop over, and take a look at this thread? I'd like to hear his side of things...
cheers

Go for it Bistro.
I agree that a rule is unnecessary, and that this kind of thing is the community's responsibility. Inviting Liam et al here is one way of dealing with it. A friendly but firm post on their page explaining the problem is another...
btw apart from the WW2 thing, is Liam et al still active, does anyone know? (I haven't checked).
As for h2g2, aren't we all meant to be writing Guide Entries instead of hanging around here chewing the fat?

You'd think if he wants to play such an major role in the community then he'd be actively participating in this thread anyway.

Bistroist - good luck with trying to get a response from 'Liam'. From what I've seen so far, people *have* tried to question what he's doing but so far, his usual 'response' has been to unsubscribe from those conversations, which makes it a bit difficult finding them, since you won't see them on his various user pages.
Now, this is only from the examples that I *have* seen - if anyone know of a conversation where he *has* replied with an explanation of what he's trying to do, please post a link

You're probably right, from what I've seen so far, chances are he won't show, and will unsubscribe from any posts I make at his user page, like he has done to previous posts of other concerned researchers. But in all fairness, I still think it should be tried.

I haven't got the faintest idea what you're talking about...

Yes, SpinksSecret, do it. Glad to see a do-er in the midst of all these talkers.
Intern, 'un-sub-scribe whats that', is something I have said I rarely do with threads I haved posted in, but under consideration for this thread (due to the number of postings, it is kept under constant review).

Bistroist was the one who was gonna post, not me.
CMIIW, but Liam hasn't actually broken any rules yet has he?

Sorry, been off for a moment, trying to get all the _possible_ User ID's for this guy. Only managed three so far, anyone (Titania?) got some more I should include?
U559717 - The Bounty Guy
U556527 - The Ranger Guy
U561257 - Star Rider the WW guy
Oh and Spinks, apart from spamming, no I believe he hasn't. But he has acted in ways that are somewhat problematical, to put it nicely, to the rest of the community.
cheers

<./>U552075</.> - MickeyMouse2, created some First Aid entries, but did not actually start any volunteer group as far as I know
<./>U552623</.> - The_Thing -- St John Ambulance Adviser
<./>U558999</.> - has deleted his user name and is currently called Researcher 558999. This person set up a whole lot of entries with some kind of 'alternative' h2g2 Guardian Angels and also gave newcomers Guardian Angel welcome messages with (obviously) faulty links

MickeyMouse2 was mentioned as a friend by the paramedic I linked to in my previous post, I've left him out of it for now.
Hadn't seen the Guardian Angel guy until now, I see the problem...
cheers

Poked about a bit more. The mickeymouse guy did have a bit of spamming going on, and has the same email-adress, so I guess he's on the list...
