Rangers, Bountys, Guardian Angels? What is going on?

They may have good intentions, but there's just something about it that gently whiffs of a hidden agenda.

Yes, it's nice for people to be welcome, but by people who know what they're talking about.
Most of the chatterz fade away from Ask after a short while, so that's cool.
If somebody's spamming, the Italics etc. will sort it out. Don't forget, while this site is growing at an exponential rate, it's actual real 'staff' are being constantly reduced

When the h2g2 Rangers reared their heads I thought it would be great. Now I'm worried. Not only is he using the Guardian Angel thing, which has been going for almost as long as the ACEs but people are starting to associate the two as one. Which really hurts me. A lot of people have put so much into the GAs and to have one person go and do this is dreadful. Its only takes one person to ruin years of work. and he has - people dont want to know about the 'real' Guardian Angels. Its really hurtful to me.

Master B - 'The ACEs appear to be a well-oiled machine' - this is probably a good moment to admit that I have poor eyesight and know nothing about machinery, so my perceptions *might* be a bit odd...

Hello all
first things first yes i am a Ace have been for some time im not a pretend ace
i do have to agree that there is nothing at all wrong with unoffical researchers welcomeing new users if they have the correct things to welcome them ie links to help them aaround it dose get on my goat when they post hello and aimlessly point them to guide ml pages and such like which is hard to get your head around if you have had no previous experiance with guide ml or html etc etc
bounty did post on my space asking for help to which i gave him/her the help they needed i knew nothing of him before that or any names he used before i joked that i had volunteerd myself but i cant as i have barely enough time for my Ace duties at the moment with me working nights as well as takeing any thing els on but if some one asks me for help then i am obliged to help them out......
at the moment i dont think bounty is breaking any house rules except some one did mention spaming iv not seen this but if you see spaming yikes the post/posts or if you are on a didgy box leave a message on my home page(you never know if i get up with enough time before work it could get yikesti will get around to yikesing it for you
i do have a idea in the pipe lines tho a help page for any one wanting to welcome newbies a welcome message use of smiles etc etc it is very raw at the moment if you are interested in helping me please do so the more the merryer i think

Aren't there several THOUSAND of these?
Aren't ACE's supposed to know about the ins and outs of this site?
GAH!
Time to introduce an entrance test methinks.

Can't be very good then. No SPAG section I take it.

Hello everyone, with a special welcome to Intern.
Intern has now joined us, most likely as a result of a message I sent. This thread is rather revealing. It shows the nature of the h2g2 community, which I find rather depressing.
Some postings just express bewilderment at what is going on, which is fair enough. Other postings seem to think that mischief is afoot, but do not seem very keen to DO anything - one even suggests sending an e-mail, but that someone else should do it. Different in character altogether, some postings think it very nice that people are welcomed, and worse than that, BBC staff have said so.
I draw to your attention the fact that, since (in posting 9) I threatened to yikes any more of the spam, I have not received any. I also note that when I asked about this (in posting 3), no-one bothered to answer the question. The most annoying thing now is that this thread continually resurfaces at the top of my in-tray. Are the members of h2g2 just becoming a herd willing to accept whatever happens, with perhaps just an occasional moan, or are they made of sterner stuff?

There hasn't been a extreme breach of the rules yet, so I think most folk were waiting to see what would happen. The strangest thing was that the people organising these bounty/ranger groups were not regular participants in H2 conversations. It seems that although they are not malicious, their idea is nothing more than an ego toy.

There's not much to yikes if you haven't seen it yourself.
I yikes when I see something that breaks the rules.
If something is breaking the rules on a larger scale, and a thread like this is started, it's usually assumed that someone from up THERE (as in the Italics) will come along and lend a hand.
No herd activity going on. This thread is in it's infancy, and therefore it's a bit harsh to suggest everyone is waiting for someone else to solve the problem.

I started this thread because I wanted to know the Community's response. If I wanted a response from the Italics I would have posted on the <./>feedback</.> page or one of the Italic's personal spaces (I'm don't asssume that the Italics read all of every thread on Ask, especially now there are not so many of them. It also seems a courtesy, if I want a response from them directly, to ask them directly rather than here).
Old Hairy - I took from your posts that *you* would yikes any more spam posts, so no-one else needed to. I think you'll find that Intern, at least, supported the yikesing of spam (re your question in post 3).
>>Are the members of h2g2 just becoming a herd willing to accept whatever happens, with perhaps just an occasional moan, or are they made of sterner stuff?<<
My feeling is that re the new groups it is important to weigh the annoyance factor, with the concern about misguiding newbies, with the possibility that the poster just wants to belong. Personally I didn't feel the need to yikes anything, but was open to posting on the spammer's page if the community thought the issue sufficiently serious. It seems that the spammer has settled down, but it'll be interesting to see if it happens again.
