the one that always annoys me is
"it's all a bit chicken and egg"
as in
"which came first - the chicken or the egg?"
look it's quite simple the egg came first. the first chicken HAD TO hatch from an EGG but the first chicken egg didn't have to come from a chicken. It's really simple evolutionary stuff folks!

Hmm, alright Apparition, revise that to "a number of subliminal message techniques which many people think work, don't". To quote snopes:
'For neither the first nor the last time, a great deal of time and money and effort was expended on "protecting" the public from something that posed no danger to them. As numerous studies over the last few decades have demonstrated, subliminal advertising doesn't work; in fact, it never worked, and the whole premise was based on a lie from the very beginning. James Vicary's legacy was to ensure that a great many people will never be convinced otherwise, however.'

Oh, that reminds me of another common one -- mobile phones are not a fire risk at petrol stations/gas stations.

I don't hold the same reguard for snoops since a snoops link about a postage stamp on snoops was posted here.
I would suggest that only that specific advertising avenue was false.

"mobile phones are not a fire risk at petrol stations/gas stations."
who ever said they were? Perhaps those really old ones that were part of the car electrical system and could be removed with a very large battery.

Mobile phones are known to spontaneously explode however and as such do pose a greater risk...

i've seen signs at the petrol pumps demanding that cellphones be turned off for that very reason (also car radios).

"play it again Sam" WAS in the first post. I don't know how I managed to forget that and post it again.
Michael Caine swears he has never said "not alot of people know that".
There is another famous quote from a movie, that was in fact never said. I'll have a dig for it.

"herds of wilderbeest sweeping majestically across the plain" was never said in Fawlty Towers.

I'm sure he did say something very close to that, showing that woman the view. She had complained, and he said it was Torquay and what would she expect? The Haging Gardens of Babylon, herds of wildebeast...
I'll have to dig out the vids and check that one.
