Fitting glass puts a lot of stress on whichever bit of the window is fitted first - usually the bottom. Glass, being particularly brittle, does not react well to any torque stresses, and the extra thickness is a safeguard against this.

I am quite about the glass thing, it's the one I always liked to believe, but whatever... It's better to know the truth!

Cheers B
Is it a sad statement about our education system that even in degree level physics they perpetuate that myth?
daS - not far off 100kg and his consultant doesn't actually mind, even if his GP does

I asked you height becaused I've been confused of late by peoples weight on TV. Eg someone who looks big and buffed on TV and the american vioce over says 180lbs and it turns out these TV americans are buffed hobbits

Alright, here's a few...
The direction water swirls doesn't depend on what hemisphere you're in.
The whole 'wait half an hour after eating before you swim' thing is untrue.
The study that brought 'subliminal advertising' to mainstream attention was flawed/faked -- I forget which. Subliminal messages don't work.
The claim that "more than 100 pennies isn't legal tender" is untrue; it usually continues "so shops don't have to accept them" -- shops don't have to accept anything, period.
Virtually everything you read in a chain email is untrue, inaccurate, or plain impossible.
Hmm. Hopefully I managed to get something everyone's believed at one time or another ... certainly I've been taken in by some of the above.
Oh -- and a duck's quack *does* echo. This has been scientifically verified... (seriously).
