I don't see why there's any debate here. Religiously based law = discrimination and, in this case, death. Sorry to be so blunt but I honestly can't see how anybody who knows of the deatj of those two young men can possibly try to justify it.

benjaminpmoore Posted Jun 29, 2006
Is the death of these two young men attributable to faith? I'm not totally sure? Is homophobia confined to religious nutters? Sadly not. Is the confidence to inflict your beleiefs on other people confined to religions? No. Look at that poor bugger in Wales who was attacked by a crowd because people thought he was a paedophile. He was a paediotrician. A doctor. Why do Iranian Muslims hang homosexuals? Why do demented Welshmen attack innocent doctors? Beause they are afraid.

Sorry. No it wasn't mob rule, it was a state killing.

Primeval Mudd (formerly Roymondo) Posted Jun 29, 2006
Homophobia is not restricted to diefic fantasists but the killing of those men was carried out under the belief that a deity felt it right.
Please, people are dead because of religious belief. Isn't that the point?

OK, I'm gonna settle this once and for all, if only to stop another 26000 posts.
I'm going to go off to a desert/wilderness/Slough for, oh, let's say 40 days and 40 nights.
I won't eat, drink or sleep during that time. I'll probably have some in-depth conversations with stones, bushes and weird-looking characters towards the end of my trip, but when I come back, I'll have the "New, Improved Religion (low-fat, high in polyunsaturates).
I'll have a few new rules for you all I expect, (I'm personally hoping for a relaxation in smoking/recreational drugs/who I get to spend the night with).
Talk amongst yourselves while I'm away.

Well that's my theory gone tits up then. I'm not sure it made any sense, anyway. It has to be said the interesting idea of a 'crime' of homosexuality is the lack of an apparent victim. Surely there has to be a victim (at least an intended victim) for a crime to have been committed? There are too many questions- are you absolutely sure God said no gays? Maybe you misheard, maybe he doesn't like grey. It is a dull colour. Let them have their bigotry if they want, let them claim it's the word of God if it makes them happy, but for... anything nonreligious, don't let them anywhere near anyone else at all.

Homosexuality is illegal under the age of 18. In which country? (a) Iran, (b) The UK, (c) Both countries.

I have no idea what God said, but I reckon God, being a fictional figure, didn't say anything.
People die because of peoples' faith. What more needs to be said?

RF - legality and morality are very different things. Whenm religion is the basis of law they become irrationally intertwined and lead to the execution of gay teenagers. Surely you don't defend the execution of gay teenagers purely because their lawmakers are diety fantasists?

Ahem could the questioner please tell me what God is? Like if I'd started a thread called, is there a dog? I could clearly explain what I thought a dog was, talk about breeds, give links to pictures, heck even mention Crufts, and I'm pretty certain 100% of researchers would know exactly what I'm talking about. So could the questioner please explain to me what God is? Surely one would have to know this in order to ask the question in the first place?

What makes me think God is fictional? Common bleedin' sense for starters. And, of course, the things people decide to do in God's name, which are things that any worthwhile God would have righteously besmited them for before they got to do 'em.

Try comparing the 10 commandments with the basic legal system.

'Ello BEG.
Common sense = the ten commandments. Did we really need a deity to tell us to treat eachother as we'd like to be treated? As I said earlier: let's have faith in humanity!

Sorry - but there is no god - Love is very rarely wrong - Laws aren't always right they are just laws.

Primeval Mudd (formerly Roymondo) Posted Jun 29, 2006
I'm with you there, CrimsonDog.
Right = not adversely affecting other peoples' lives.
Wrong = adversely affecting other peoples' lives.
No need for a deity to point that out.

I think its pretty trivial to start a thread like this when there's a World Cup on, and more to the point England are still in contention!
