Mainstream acceptance for it all is still a fairly new thing. My Mum would react more to a visible tattoo than a facial piercing...
Speaking of facials : anyone else seen Mike Tyson's facial tat? Fantastic! He is such a scary scary man.

i agree that mainstream acceptance is a thing. and tattoos are seen as the ulmighty evil really, piercings are close behind, but jewllery can be removed but tatts can't.
I used to get quite miffed that people got annoyed at my nose stud and i had to take it out for work but the people that i dealt with weren't ready to accept my professionalism whilst i wore it - which was wrong - but being regarded as a professional was more important to me than being a goth. had i dealt with the same people all of the time then i would have re-introduced it and they would have accepted it, but i have long since realised that i cannot change the views of the old world, just try to educate the new one.
wow - even i dont know what that means Reminisces to red wedge days!

I don't have a clue, but on a similar line to Sir Mort, it seems that although in some circles it's becoming increasingly acceptable *not* to be 'smart', and thus piercings, tattoos and so forth are increasingly tolerated, in others it's just as it used to be, which is a dichotomy I don't really like very much.
But that might be because I'm a layabout student who just had to buy a suit and really wishes it hadn't been necessary. It's not like wearing a suit is going to make me a better programmer, is it?
Or maybe wearing one to my graduation will get me an extra degree class...
And also, what's this thing people have with hair dye? Why can't scarlet hair be considered smart? You can style it just as well as you can style naturally coloured hair, yet some employers will turn their noses up at it as they will at a piercing or a visible tattoo. Silly really.
I may wince when I see them, but I really don't have a problem with people getting tattoos and piercings - as long as they're not ugly ones

Red Wedge was a movement founded by Billy Bragg, very left wing - gay rights etc, concerts, marches of [old]Labour supporters and political awareness and all that kind of stuff. A time when you thought something was wrong you could walk the streets and tell people.
