Does anyone want to join me in some self denial?
Ferino Posted Mar 10, 2003
I have given up procrastination.
Can that count for this? For most people that isn't self denial, but it most definitely is for me!
I couldn't think of anything else to give up, since I've already phased out chocs, crisps and the like and the gaping hole in my social life means I don't drink enough to make it worth giving up!

Ferino, you're now on the chart as giving up Procrastination.
Galaxy Babe, I've left a space on the chart for you giving up Sex, Alchohol and Staying Up Late, but I wasn't exactly sure did you really mean it, as you put a winkeye smiley in there. You can still change your mind.

Might? Can you be a bit more definite? You've only to say the word and I will put you on the chart. Then you'll have to do it or face the consequences!

Nice one Gnomon! Oh sorry I forgot some of you are off the drink for the duration.
Would it be terribly dull and boring of me to insert a short historical note on the origins of Lent in northern European countries? It coincides with a time of year when, in the 'good old days' before canning, refrigeration and processed foods, supplies of fresh food were scarce, the last of the fall harvest had pretty much been consumed at Christmas or was rotting and most imported goods like sweets, spices and fresh tropical fruits were unavailable because winter conditions prevented a lot of shipping? It's no wonder the Church tried to make a game out of it. Starvation and scurvy are not fun.
Yeah it would be terribly dull and boring wouldn't it.
Never mind.
Carry on.

The Eastern Christian Church, of course, has three seasons of Lent!

Hmmmmmmmm
Can you give up something you don't do?
Put me down for giving up sex, alcohol and late nights, if you can.
There isn't another h2g2 meet that I can make until the Summer, that'll be my next weekend off.

I've given up for Lent so I'll join you! First time I've tried abstaining for lent too... I've had to hide anything chocolate related at the back of cupboards so it doesn't remind me!
Not a lot of point in giving up booze, sex and late night cuz I'm not getting any of that anyway at the mo'!

That tag, .
Right then, after some thought I think it's time I found out if I could do without Marmite for a bit. So I'll have a go at giving it up.

Gnomon!
(Though I won't be adding "giving up chocolate till Easter" on my nickname, cuz that'll just give me a reminder of it's existence every time I'm on here!
The good thing about giving up you see, is that you can finish and celebrate with a major binge from all those easter eggs!

I'm hoping that by giving up chocolate, I'll be able to cure my addiction to it.

I'll try and give up origami in public.
You might not think it is a bad habit, but when you've distracted everyone else during boring meetings making dragons and cats, or embarrassed your partner by creating lotus flowers in restaurants it does begin to sink in that it may be less than courteous, even if it appears a mere harmless obsession.

This may sound a little silly, but I'm going to try and give up thinking depressive thoughts. Whatever happens, I must keep a positive outlook, because depression ain't gonna get me anywhere.
So I hereby want to give up: Thinking sad thoughts.
I hope that counts.
