It's just a case of applying the same precautions as you would any other internet site - this is, after all, the internet, and thus open to all and sundry. You're never gonna find a forum that is guaranteed to be free of weirdos. If somebody was determined enough, it wouldn't be that difficult to find out all sorts of information about you.

I never used to put anything personal about me at all, more for fear of somebody I knew being on here and guessing who I was, and reading my more sad/lonely type posts. But then I figured fuggit, that's me, I'm not hiding!

If somebody wants to lurk and follow my conversations, that's up to them. I don't give out information on where I live, or phone numbers etc. I'm not gonna worry about somebody 'tracking me down', you can spend your whole life being too paranoid!

Does everybody know that you can list all the people who have you as a friend on their page? You need to add a line of GuideML to your Personal SPace:



This should be put after the in your personal space.

I once got stalked in RL...when the police came to see me..I hadn't even noticed I kept bumping into this person but thought nothing of it....eventually a neighbour had reported his car being parked across the road all the time watching our house. I moved shortly after...I can't believe I didn't notice!

does the fact that i popped onto your homepage, read it, then read your conversation before posting to it make me a stalker? or a lurker? or just a nosy so and so?

Daraline, unless you read everything I post, you are not a stalker.

Alot of people find their way round hootoo by seeing an interesting looking thread on someone's page.

Unless it is an obviously personal chat, it is a good way to get to know other researchers and new areas to join in.

Daraline: And, if you read everything Gnomon posts, you'd have been in a terminal stupor by now.

I find that hard to believe. I meant more in terms of all your helpful computer advice.

Well, maybe I have, but I never look at it anyway, so I wouldn't know.

I have accidently given away my address, on here.. well when i was househunting I said I was looking at a flat above a certain type on shop in a part of birmingham, then realising that there's only one of them. But I've not said anything I'm ashmaded off..

I worry that hootoo pals' partners will read a thread and I get accused of being a stalker!

Its nice to talk to a stranger but lets face it ...you could be talking to some well folk.

I think he got arrested...it was our neighbour who had noticed the car parked across the road all the time..and I kept bumping into this person but at the time lived in a small town so it never occurred to me.He had apparently done it before and the poor girl was terrified.
She moved to Leeds to get away from him...he must have been getting very frustrated at the fact i hadn't noticed
