I think they should stick Bush and Saddam in a boxing ring, have them fight to the death and solve it that way! smiley - biggrin

Bush would only want to play if his Dad could give Saddam a good hiding first.

What's WRONG with opposing pre-emptive war?

Alec, I just looked at your personal space since I was among those you admonished for failing to find out your country of origin. It says you lived in Germany, presumably lived in England, and apparently lived in Florida at the time of writing (2001). Even if anyone had checked your personal space, there's nothing there saying exactly where you are from.

I think the reason that some people have expressed themselves with vitriol towards the US is that some polls around the world are showing more people frightened by the actions of the US than by other countries, even the "axis of evil".

To paraphrase Yoda (*gag*), fear of the US leads to anger, anger at the US leads to unruly discussion on message boards asking where the US gets the nerve to shamelessly propose pre-emptive warfare as if the idea was not unjust at face value.

i certainly don't hate americans... how can i hate a nation that brought us buffy?!...smiley - cool

alec... i should have read your space first anyway... my reply might have been a little bit less harsh if i had done so... someone who mentions citroen in their journal can't be bad...smiley - smiley

you obviously have your reasons for being anti-french at the mo'... fair enough... i don't agree with your arguments and your attempt to make the french look like they're the worst people on earth... but, could we meet half way?!... surely we're on h2g2 to enjoy ourselves, _not_ to start WW3...smiley - biggrin

i _might_ even convince you that _some_ french people are ok...smiley - wow

what do you think?!...smiley - ok?!

Is that a reason for vitriol? Do people rely on opinion polls, notoriously fickle at the best of times, to make their mind up for them? Can they not formulate their own opinions without relaying on opinion polls do it for them?

stuart: i would myself blame the media when it comes to stirr up hatred of certain nationalities...smiley - biggrin
and yep... unfortunately a lot of factors influence us in how we see other nationalities.. either we want it or not... some of us manage to escape some of the influence... some don't...
but in the case of this particular thread, the fact that they are some anti-american threads on h2g2smiley - yikes should not justify starting some other threads bashing other nationalities...

other countries' governments, yep.. no problem... but the people who live in those countries... no way...smiley - smiley

we're a kinda international community on h2g2... slagging each others' people off is certainly not a positive way to go on methinks... too much bad vibes could spoil a site...smiley - smiley

I agree with you there Loup. I have followed this thread with mild amusement. One or two things have crossed my mind but have refained from saying anything for the reasons you mention.

I think the original post was meant to be a bit tongue-in-cheek but didn't quite come out that way. The problems of text only communications. As a friend of mine was fond of saying - "Dont let the b******s get you down"

I think it might have been me who broke the Race Relations Act, alec.
Strange that. It's usually the Species Relations Act I have trouble with.
But, after a pleasant a chat with Loup d'Argent, I have decided that I should apologise to Jedi Apprentice. Particularly if it gets me out of a lawsuit.
However, in our new-found spirit of litigation, I would like to inform Dr Montague Trout that I plan to sue for libel on account of his outrageous assertion that I represent the Daily Mail.
