sorry, I was composing and missed a few posts. I don't really think we should close our borders; that was a joke. I agree with the French Wolf: learn from each other.

anhaga, I think you have misunderstood my post. Perhaps due to my alchohol consumption smiley - smiley

Someone reading the post I replied to would be forgiven for thinking that the normans came over and everyone dumped 80% of their language for the french equivalent. this is obviouysly not the case.
I assume from your latest post that your knowledge in this area is far in advance of my own and perhaps an informative post pointing out where I had gone wrong would have been more constructive. Perhaps a post similar to your one above, but in 11th/12th century norman french would prove the point?

Did I say "immediately" after the Norman Conquest? I didn't mean to. I meant to say "after the Norman Conquest" My point in putting in the Old English bits was to show that we don't use most of those words anymore, we use words of French origin. "wyrd oft nereth unfaegne eorl thonne his ellen deah" contains three words we still use in something like the Old English way: oft (often), eorl (earl), and his (his). Like we've discussed previously in this thread, the terms for common things (personal pronouns, body parts, foods) have pretty much stayed the same, but the less frequently used parts of the vocabulary, which make up the largest portion of the vocabulary, were replaced over the course of a number of centuries by French words. Blah, Blah, Blah.

Sorry.smiley - biggrin

oops! we haven't discussed that on this thread! I'm carrying on two many conversations at once. If I say something about privatizing liquor stores, just ignore it.

I have put off very badly from contributing again to this thread because of the nastiness of certain researchers to me.

Why cannot let by gones be bygones. And stop this have a go at the French Lark. It does not solve anything but causes alot of hurt feelings.

I am only contributing now so that I want people to think about this thread is sounding to outsiders. We live in a very divided world with many divisions. We should be building bridges with other cultures and not have the high and mighty we are better than them. There are enough wars around the world, we should be promiting peace, reconcillation and understanding. This is the 21st century and we should strive to build a better world where all culture differences are respected. We all should learn from the past. We should have evolved away from this behaviour by now. I suppose I will be insulted again. I really do not like cyber fights. By the way I am a 40 year old female.

We have put a man in the moon yet this subject thread does nothing positive. What can be gained by insulting the French people? Why do it? No race or nationality should be insulted in this way or should be generalised! Please tell me why is there so much vindictiveness shown to the French? I would never generalised on any race, people or nation as everyone is an individual. I have read this conversation from the very start. We should celebrate differences in cultures and not mock them. The world is getting smaller and many cultures, customs are disappearing fast. Do you want a world where everyone talked the same, dressed the same and lived the same way?

Please answer my points!

Borders of countries & contintents are man made. They are made in men's hearts & minds.

Show solidarity with your sister & brother in their need.

Live together in harmony, promote better understanding of different peoples.

Do you too idealistic for this thread.

Seek out the good in people not the bad.

If you seek ou the bad people you will only see the bad.

There is alot of cynicism shown here about the French.

Please try and build bridges not barriers.

Learn to respect cultural differencs.

Realise people are individuals.
You get arrogant people in all cultures. Just like you get good and bad people in all countries.

Please do not generalise, we are all individuals.

Native American saying do not just anyone until you have been a day in their teepee.

Have you met ever single person in France. No you have not. Judge not and you shall not be judged.
We all have personal weaknesses and failings and it is not confided to people or nation.

Sweeping generalisations do not help. Why do it?

So, if I've understood, the point of this thread was to highlight that it is unfair to criticise all Americans for the position of their government, and that the anti-American threads might be perceived as agressive by Americans on site?

Strikes me as a mighty convoluted way of making that point. If you had just posted that without all the rigmarole, then I would have agreed with you.

Maybe we need a waste of time smiley?

I knew I was going to be insulted again.

I suppose my points of views do not count and you do not want me to contribute. You have hurt my feelings alot. I am very upset but who cares about my feelings.

I only pointed out that we are all individuals and there are arrogant people in all cultures. We should be building bridges and trying to get to understand people of other cultures.

I have not wrote anything extreme. It seems you like insulting me.

BTW I do not have anything against Americans. I have never attacked Ameericans in this post because I would find that totally unfair. The US is made all people of different nationalities. There is no such thing as typical American just as there is no thing as a typical Frenchman or Frenchwoman. We are all individuals and I would never generalise about Americans just as I wont generalise about the French.

I have never blamed the Americans on the actions of their goverment in this thread. I know that I will never blame Americans on the actions of their government. I have never said so. I do realise that there are Americans who are against what there government is doing.
