Picallilli is a mustard flavoured pickle spread, hence the yellow colour. And it's fantastic with any hard cheese.

ugh! My father loves it, and I loath it like most pickles though so strange as I'm also normally a big fan of mustard

TC - I forgot that a sub roll is something you don't have on the other side of the pond.
They're also called submarine rolls, torpedo rolls, or hoagie rolls, and there might be a couple of other names for them, but they escape me right now.
Basically,it's like a long, fat hot dog bun that we use to make big, big sandwiches. They can be anywhere from 6 inches to 6 feet or more long, although the ones made over about a foot long are primarily for parties or competitive reasons. (I heard about one this summer that was about 30 feet long, and made specifically to get in the guiness book of world records as the longeset sub ever made)
We have sub shops in this country - one that's particularly well known is called Subway, and they have a variety of bread types available for their subs, with a variety of meats, cheeses, veggies and toppings avaliable. You can see pictures of various subs on subway.com - click on the menu. Depending on whats in the sub, they could be served hot (such as meatball, cheesesteak or roasted chicken breast) or cold (turkey, tuna salad, or various other cold cuts or veggie subs)

Not knowing what a large cob is... I'd have to say it's similar in shape to a baguette, but not as crusty, definitely softer inside, and usually a little wider to accomodate pieces of meat and cheese.

I'd call that a bridge roll.
Funny. One under water, one over.

We have Subway over here in England. I had the misfortune to be a Shift Manager in one for 18 months. To be honest, its just another cr*ppy fast food franchise. Maybe the salad and bread is fresh, but everything else is frozen and microwaved. They are horribly overpriced £4-5 for a footlong meal. They are just sandwiches-whats so special? As they are novelty, students think they are really cool by buying Subs.

Mind you, the meatball sandwich is one that you couldnt get cheaper from a normal snadwich shop, as I have never ever seen meatball sandwich anywhere else. This is the only thing worth buying in Subway (and its still too expensive)

Of course we have sub rolls, although I hadn't heard them called torpedoes til a few days ago.
We even have Subway sandwich bars! Surely they're a US company?

Large cob, depends on which bit of the country your talking about I guess... I pressume them to be basically extra large rolls, really quite huge, and perhaps a little larger length compaired to height, when compaired to a normal" roll like a short, dumpy bagette sort of

Subway is just another fast food chain, sure... but at least you can get something *relatively* healthy there, compared to eating at a typical burger and fries joint, where it's all fried .
I actually liked the roasted chicken on whole wheat with provolone and their dijon horseradish sauce with black olives and lettuce, but I ate it too often and got sick of it at the time. Since that was last summer, I might be able to eat one occasionally now.
I make my own meatball subs at home...

I've loved making chocolate and bananana pancakes ever since I went to Thailand. Haven't made them in ages, but you just reminded me of seeing Dawn make peanut butter and Bananana pancakes on Buffy last night but I fell asleep before I could make them. Tonight maybe.
