Captain_SpankMunki [Keeper & Former ACE] Thanking <Diety of choice> for the joy of Goo.

Haha - Cue Dead Ringers:

Scene: White House Oval Office
Present:
Prez Bush
Aide
Scenery:
Blackboard with "Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan and Britain" on it

Aide (sings): "One of these words is not like the others. One of these words doesn't belong"
Prez: (points to Iraq) "That one?"

h2g2 is a BBC site - I don't have to ask the copywrite owners' permission to miss-quote so badly.

Liam.

smiley - biggrin I still can't get over Bush's "Internet Quote":
"You've heard Al Gore say he invented the internet.
Well, if he was so smart, why do all the addresses begin with 'W'?"

Somehow I don't think he made that one up himself.

He doesn't need to, it still makes him look daft! Ah, the joys of a major political figurehead we can all laugh at...

Ahh, someone else who watches 2D TV...
Supposedly the nukes wouldn't actually be to destroy the asteroid, as it would just fragment and we would have several strikes to contend with. However, we don't yet have the skill to do that yet - we need practice!! But, seeing as we've got enough of the damn things to wipe the face off the planet, we could just fire a few into the asteroid belt and monitor the results. And if we failed in the end, how about ust launching 2 waves - the first fragments the asteroid, the second detonates in a spread and vapourises anything thats left.

Mister Matty

Exactly, we need practice smiley - ok

Breaking the asteroid up is a good idea. Break it up enough and the pieces will be so small that they'll disperse harmlessly on contact with the atmosphere.

I agree with Zagreb on this one. If there is an Apocalypse event on the way, even the destruction of several cities is the lesser of two evils. Sorry about the mixing of metaphors there.

I took a logical extension of your comments. At least it seemed logical to me.

I'm disappointed, you got my hopes about Manchester. I have a personal issue with that city; Keith Moon died while I was on a pub crawl there. Technically not its fault, I know, but what with the rain and everything I find it depressing.

Is there anyoner out there to play football anyway (btw Americans cal it "Soccer"!)

Manchester isn't all that bad. You get used to the rain.

*cough*
My daughter lives in Manchester - so I hope it's spared!
smiley - grovel

As to the asteroid threat, better that we don't know, along with all the rest of the stuff we don't know.

What we really are eating in processed foods; what we are allowing our babies to be poisoned with in the name of saving the Governments money via healthcare; what really happened in Roswell....blah blah

Blues Shark - For people who like this sort of thing, then this is just the sort of thing they'll like

>Does anyone else think we're being idiots by not making plans to save our civilisation (?)<
Just to return to the original point for a minute-If you find me a 'civilized' part of the planet *worth* saving, I'll donate my all my money and even sell my house to support this fine international effort.

...assuming you can find such a fine international effort, that is.

I think the lack of such a fine international effort and the lack of such a 'civilized' spot go pretty much hand in hand, don't they?

It is odd that nobody with enough money to do so (governments, largely) has thought this a good idea...

I guess it just doesn't sound cool enough. Too much like science fiction.

I have to disagree with the posts saying it might not be a bad thing, though... sounds to me like a very bad thing indeed.

Wether it's a bad thing or not depends on if you want the human race to survive or not.
Someone once did a calclation saying that ab asteroid protection system offer similar value per life saved (on average) as the british goverment spens on stopping people getting killed by cars. It might have been a nonsense calculation though.

In response to Just(e) Bob (post 31) - I've lived in and around Manchester for 40 years and I've never got used to the bloody rain! And now they're talking about dropping a blooming great rock on us? What sort of hat is going to keep that off, that's what I want to know! smiley - winkeye
