Having a nice little customized country to take shelter in should be the dream of any enlightened, reasonable intelligent person. 
The trick is keeping the borders flexible enough so that you can allow compatible friends, lovers, chilldren, pets, pizza-delivery people into it as you wish, but not so flexible that ogres and pests can get in .
