If we're going to entertain the notion of Gracie Fields, why not Gracie Allen?
GRACIE: They laughed at Joan of Ark, but she built it anyway.
GEORGE: Why do I keep singing? It's because there's something in me that has to come out. If you had it in you, you'd want it out, too.
GRACIE: George, remember when you asked me to marry you? I went to my mother and said, "Mother, I want to get married in the worst way."
She said, "Well, this is it."
GEORGE AND GRACIE:
Strolling with that someone,
meeting sigh after sigh.
Nice work if you can get it,
And you can get it if you try.
GEORGE: Gracie, your roast beef is always perfect. How do you do it?
GRACIE: Oh, George, that's because I always put a big roast and s small roast in the oven at the same time. So, when the little roast is burned, the big one is just right.
Ba-da-big!

You already *have* my vote, Lady Scott. I can't vote twice, can I?
Last night I saw "Princess Diaries 2," in which Julie Andrews did some singing. That's probably about as much as she can do nowadays, but the lady should remember that not many almost-septuagenarians can sing much anyway. Besides, as Julie herself will admit, there's a lot more to putting a song across than having great vocal cords. She's still tops in expressiveness.
(Okay, okay, I developed a huge crush on Julie when I was 12--and she was 25--so I'm not unbiased here. Suffice it to say that it's good that I didn't have to agonize between voting for Lady Scott and voting for Julie Andrews. )
