Serendipities by Umberto Eco. It covers so much stuff in such a short volume, it's like the TARDIS (which I'm sure is explained in the text somewhere).

Abi - my recommendations at this time of year a funny stories to make you laugh out loud. If you haven't already, grab a copy of 'Mother Tongue' by Bill Bryson - it's an intelligent and hilarious look at the English language.
If not, I suggest you print out a chunk of <./>RandomEditedEntry</.> selections that you've not ever managed to find the time to read yet... There's also a good piece developing in the Alternative Writing Workshop...

"Time to Depart" by Lindsey Davis. Before that I read "There are no ghosts in the Soviet Union" by Reginald Hill (of Dalziel and Pascoe fame), which was a collection of short stories, including what seems to be the first appearance by Luton's premier P.I., Joe Sixsmith.

"Lord of the Rings" by Tolkien. I actually started on this months before I heard about the film but the library called it back...
"Sherlock Holmes - his last bow" by Conan Doyle. I'm trying to read the whole Sherlock serie and have gotten so far.
"Life, the Universe and Everything" by Adams. I'm reading over all books I own by him to honour his 50th b-day.
I'm sure I have some other half-finished books around here too...

"The Count of Monte Cristo", Dumas, and "The Haunted Wizard", Stasheff. but i'm a little between books just now, i've jsut finished a few... the first, i admit, i'm partly re-reading because of the movie, so i can see all the Liberties they have no doubt taken with the plot and be outraged by them.
