<< Blott On The Landscape - both Tom Sharpe>>
Back in 1987, I saw a miniseries of Blott on the Landscape, starring David Suchet - utterly brilliant!

Totally agree about the series (and the books are good as well), shame they didn't try a few more.
Reading "Sisterhood of the Blue Storm" Fourth Book of the Orokon, by Tom Arden - the series is growing on me slowly.

Currently reading the Rough Guide to the Greek Islands and a Greek language phrasebook because I'm flying off on my holidays today.
Thinking of taking my copy of the Odyssey or the Iliad or some Greek myths as flight reading material - but I'll probably end up packing something a bit lighter from the pile of stuff I've bought but haven't got round to reading yet

Finished Sharpe's Havoc last night. And now I only have Sharpe's Escape to go. So now I'm all of a dither. Will I wait a while (anticipation and all that) or shall I read it and then be sad there are (possibly) no more Sharpes for me? I also have a massive pile of books waiting to be read, including the laid aside Ragged Trousered Philanthropists and The Kalahari Typing School For Men.
In the dithery meantime I've started Brick Lane. After about 10 pages so far so good.
Of course, what I really should be doing is editing my own thing.

Go for the Ragged Trousered Philanthropists - quite a long book, but I found it pulls you along with it. How was Sharpe's Havoc?

I really liked it, Hogan is in it (as a captain) and I really like that character. Some nice digs at the English from Harper too, which I think add to the characters.
Sharpe at his best leadership wise, and it really shows how he feels about his men. And of course, he falls in love (sort of) with a beautiful, and unavailable to him, lady.
oh, and not too much of the gore, compared to - say - Waterloo, which actually turned my usually cast iron stomach.

I've never read any of the Sharpe books - how would you rate them historically, ie. are they reasonably well researched, or is it a case of not letting the facts get in the way?

I'm not a history expert, so I can't say, although from Cornwell's notes at the end it seems to be well researched. He does admit to stealing other people's adventures and having Sharpe do them, but there's nothing wrong with that.
I must admit I do love how he'll have Sharpe talking to some lady, and then in the next sentence have Sharpe cracking a louse he found in his shirt collar. I also love the description of how the soldiers lived. It sounds like a miserable life.

Wow, holidays in what Robert Holdstock, in the book Iron Grail calls 'Greek Land'! (Highly recommended, BTW, as with all Robert Holdstock's books.)

Now reading Tapping the Dream Tree- tales of Newford, by Charles de Lint. A wonderful author, though I like his short stories better than his novels.

Further to my earlier answer, nearly finished "Around Alone" and the news on the grapevine is Ms.Richards is to do a signing tour of all the company sites in the UK, so it looks like, if I can get into work early enough (I'm on a twilight shift) I may get the pleasure after all

Just finished 'How Mumbo-Jumbo Conquered the World' by Francis Wheen, excellent, funny but with plenty to think about contained within

Reading "veronica decides to die" - Paul Coelho.
Very good, not as depressing as it sounds. More about what there is to live for and different ways of thinking about things.

I saw David Suchet play Salieri in Amadeus (in Los Angeles). He is a great actor (not as good as Patrick Stewart, but who is).
