Currently I'm re-reading catch-22. I loved it the first time I read it but I actually think it's better the second time becuase you've just about figured out who everyone is so you don't have to keep flicking back to find out what's going on.

Last weekl I started reading "Flu" by Gina Kolata about the 1918 epidemic. Then we learned that our flu vaccine was contaminated...Co-incidence???

Ooh! Sounds interesting! I understand that it started amongst chickens in a British military transit camp in France.

Just finished 'Dogs of Riga' by Henning Mankell. A Swedish police detective getting mixed up with some very nasty stuff in Latvia.
About to start Sharpe's Escape.

""About to start Sharpe's Escape.""
I found reading the books after the seeing the series dissapointing, 'cause as normal they're not the same. But I've also read his other books, and they make a good read.

I'm a big fan of Bernard Cornwell - particularly his Arthurian books. I usually find that books are better than the tv programmes/films they spawn - the pictures in my head are better than anything on large or small screen. The exception to this is Mr Sean Bean , whose image is very much in my minds eye as I read.
I know that some of the Sharpe episodes were tv before they appeared as books.

You & Me both!!
I've just read Sharpe's Battle and I'm going to start Sharpe's Tiger this afternoon.
(Battle was written for the TV thing, but Cornwell was only half way through when they had to start filming, so the 2nd half of the book and the 2nd half of the film differ. According to his foreward, anyway. And he dedicated it to Sean Bean, which I think was rather nice, since Bean is blond and Sharpe has dark hair.)
In my case, I don't care if I see the series (oh, Sunday, it's on tonight ) during reading the books, since I find (for some strange reason) that I don't really pay attention to the plot when I'm watching.

I've just been listening to a discussion on R4 about historical fiction - Bernard Cornwell and Philippa Gregory were taking part. I'm fascinated by the details of people's lives.

Just starting Terry Pratchett's "Monstrous Regiment", enjoying so far.
Contrasting this with Alexandra David Neal's "My Journey to Lhasa" plus various other books dotted around the house to dip into as desired.
Seems to be a common thing with those on this thread to have several books on the go at once

The American Way Of Death by Jessica Mitford - a surprisingly readable and amusing classic about the American funeral business, from the Mitford that proved that genetics can't be blamed for everything.
My Travels With Charley by John Steinbeck.
Looking forward to The Attack On America by Philip Roth

SO far, it's about a picnic. At Hanging Rock, unsurprisingly. But I've only just started it...

a big boy did it and ran away
another (so far) outstanding satire by that scottish genius Christopher Brookmyre. Try not to be put off by james nesbit's butchering of quite ugly one morning on the sickingly dire ITV.
