I have read the Hobbit, though I have to say it did not grab me as much as the opening chapters of LotR - which are great!

Frany and Zooey - what a great book, and Seymore / Raise High the Roofbeams too. Nothing like Catcher in the Rye (which i also love) but amazing books.

"We can remember it for you Wholesale" - Philip K Dick
It's the last volume in a set of short stories and it is pretty good, it has stuff that inspired Bladerunner and Total Recall. As well as some other typical odd PKD stuff.

Sophie's World (can't remember the name of the author at the mo).
A brilliant book about philosophy from the start in Greece to the present, written as a story so it's very easy to understand, and full of nuggets of history.

Just finished Terry Pratchetts latest pamphlet, "The Last Hero", at only 160 pages and a selection of pictures, it didn't take too long, therefore just started on Simon Schamas' "A History of Britain - 1603 to 1776 The British Wars" a more heavier read, and has started off very well.

"Death of an Expert Witness" by P.D. James. Only one person's dead so far, but you can tell who's next because everybody hates him.

Well I'm just polishing of another discworld novel The Truth, for some light night time reading sometime soon I plan to get back into Le Carré. I brought some books of his a while back but got distracted by numerous things and never read them. We'll soon fix that.

On a related topic, a friend at uni is suffering some missfortune at the moment - she read a book for her course and because she lives some thirty miles from the campus and drives in each day - decided to post it back. Now it's gone missing!
So she has to face the slight embarresment of inquiring at various library helpdesks and the also faces the ignomnity of having to ring up the local post office in question and maybe even the sorting office and declare that she is looking for:
THE DIALECTIC OF SEX
by Shulamith Firestone
When she told us that - we couldn't help but laugh. Very loudly. In a very quiet library. - Whoops!

Just to check up on that... Sophie's World was written by a Norwegian (I think) author called Jostein Gardner. He also wrote ... The Solitaire Mystery, a life of St. Augustine called Vita Brevis or That Same Flower, and one about christmas...
I'm reading Terry Pratchett at the moment. I got hold of The Truth three days ago, and am still miffed that it was not available (or that I didn't know it was). I also have various schoolbooks on my floor...
