Blatherskite the Mugwump - Bandwidth Bandit

You haven't "risen above" anything. Shortly before I logged off for the day, you issued your challenge, and I didn't have the time to make a full response at the time. That was when you engaged in your chocolate party, as a direct attempt to manipulate popular opinion and make people think you're nice. You're the fun one, and I'm the jerk for bringing up an apparently long-dead issue. It's not long-dead for me. When I last logged on, I was issued a challenge. When I logged in next, I responded to the challenge. And you can't even counter, except with further baiting.

Just admit that you were wrong. Admit that you've been at least as much of a jerk as I have. Admit that you instigated this entire affair. I don't have to say anything more on that subject. The evidence speaks for itself.

And on a side note, while reading through the backlog, I noticed a side-argument that I declined to participate in. It was quite a revelation. The synopsis of the argument went like this:

Dancing Ermine: Men and women think differently.
Amy: No, they don't.
Potholer: Men and women think differently.
Amy: No, they don't.
Potholer: Sure they do.
Amy: No, they don't.

So much for your powers of debate.

God, the conversation about kettles was less boring than this one. smiley - bigeyessmiley - zzz

Amy, stop being so righteous and strident and patronising. CS, stop being so righteous and strident and patronising. smiley - winkeye

Potholer

In contrast to the other conversation, I don't remember seeing any *men* using *female* film stars or similar to illustrate what they were looking for in an ideal partner.
Assuming I'm not mistaken, I wonder if this is because we're actually above all that, or because we want to pretend we are?

Speaking personally, if my arm were twisted my shortlist would contain more singer/songwriters than actresses. I suppose creativity and intelligence play some part (and I couldn't deny that there would be some element of appearance as well), but I think that the voice is one of the most important factors.
A voice that can carry real emotion, and be soft enough to sink right into bypasses most of my defences without even trying. Anyone else feel similarly?

That's a very interesting point. No one has said here that they want a Catherine Zeta Jones but they're queing across the way for Sean Connery.

I think voices are important to women too.

What *kind* of voice?

Are any male singer/songwriters percieved as attractive by women?

Dancing Ermine

Surely that depends on the age? Not to mention the woman smiley - winkeye

I don't know about singer/songwriters. I suspect not. But the spoken word... yum!

So - (ignoring the age), would Tom Baker and/or Shakespearean actors be nearer the mark?

I refuse to be drawn on specifics but it's deep voices, yes. It's probably a testosterone indicator (which is a pity because I seem to have developed an allergy to it quite recently smiley - winkeye).

I seem to remember that Rick Astley had a remarkably deep voice - but I guess that wasn't quite what you were meaning

Rick Astley, discovered by the hit factory (Stock Aitkin and Waterman) in Newton Le Willows. Had several big chart pop hits in the early 80s then disapeared not to be seen again...

Potholer, you're a man after my own heart - the siren song sings for both of us - I 'fall in love' with young female singers all the time -it used to worry me - at my age! I'll mention some of the older ones.
Annie Lennox, Stevie Nicks, the Heart girls -
But give me Nina Simone to make me weep...
Jennifer Warnes to give me strength...

*tries crooning in his best Irish tenor*

"I'm in love with Amy,
Always in love with Amy..."

*but fails - his voice is just too deep
from all those years in radio and drama
all those cigarettes and Wild Turkey 101*

Galaxy Babe - eclectic editor

I must admit that I'm currently in love with the voice of Shane Filan.
Have been for almost two years now.
*sigh*
My b/f has a lovely voice.
And he phones me "just to hear my voice"...
So there must be something in the voice thing.
And that is one thing that ~never~ changes...my mother's eyes have now become blue, and faded...they were a beautiful hazel colour. My father's eyes are almost pale as the whites...but their voices, I can close my eyes and I am back to being a child again, hearing them.

Voices are wonderful. I know of somebody who phones one of our helpdesks (when required) and hopes they will get to speak to a certain female who works there. smiley - winkeye

Argon0 (50 and feeling it - back for a bit)

Sorry to be picky (actually why should I be smiley - winkeye) CS, but it was I that started the smiley - choc party NOT Amy.

It was an attempt to poke ridicule at the argument - not the individuals - as my MUM used to say to my brother and I "why can't you agree to disagree?".

It seems obvious (to me) that both CS and Amy have very strong opinions on this matter and neither is going to change them, so to quote someone a bit more famous "let it lie" (Vic Reeves I think)smiley - biggrin....

However the argument itself has (in its earlier stages) caused me to think about myself and some of my relationships - which is a GOOD thing. Recently it has degenerated into not much more than a Slanging match. I suggest either: Pistols at dawn, or shake and make up. smiley - winkeye.
