A Conversation for Volunteer to be a Community Artist

Now that I've been registered with an asylum room number (or is that prisoner number with no release date?), I'd like to try being a Community Artist please. From reading the other conversations, I gather I have to wait for Mina to come round on Tuesday and test me (assuming she wakes up). However, given that I've been too cautious to register for ages (scary stuff about the site), there's a good chance that one of us won't be back here until after xmas!

In case it makes any difference, I'm more of a graphic artist (logos, maps, fonts etc) than a painter and more used to old-fashioned computer limitations than this new-fangled multi-colour anti-aliased stuff. So it will be interesting to see if I can manage anything like the prevailing style. Maybe I'll be the first outright failure rather than being a strategic retreat - unless someone else already has that honour...

You seem to have your finger on the pulse smiley - biggrin. I hope we're not too scary.

My fingers are mostly on keyboards or crayons smiley - winkeye. I don't think you look like one of the scary things smiley - biggrin. I've been lurking for a while. Not ever being able to de-register was one of my concerns along with having no control over possibly nasty messages being posted onto my personal space smiley - sadface. The yikes button is a good improvement though smiley - smiley.

PS I think I've already discovered a new(?) message-board / h2g2 bug though smiley - erm.

PPS I can't believe h2g2 doesn't have a dolphin smiley. I came to the conclusion that "so long and thanks for all the fish" was unnecessary if no-one was allowed to leave the h2g2 world. I've already got a dolphin (adapted from an old icon of mine) along with lots of others but I'm not allowed to paste any of my own pictures here smiley - sadface.

PPPS Expect me to be a bit slow in conversations as I like to check things several times _@o" (speedy snail with slimy trail)

Hi Clelba.

I have a tendency to read terms and conditions too(?) carefully and think of all the possible consequences smiley - biggrin. The bug is nothing to do with art but with bizarre login/logout interactions and inconsistency of the online indicators. I've already raised it on the Science Technology Message Board, but perhaps I should query it somewhere else on h2g2 as well... smiley - erm

Hi SEF

You should get your two test pics on Tuesday. I'll just wave from afar otherwise my cats might interfere with your health smiley - erm

Hi Wotchit

Thanks for the warning. I took a cautious peek at your space from a safe distance, but I think your cats must have wandered off somewhere as the fish didn't look as worried as they should. Perhaps the cats saw the cricket game - that would certainly make me find somewhere less hazardous to sleep.

I see you like music too. I still haven't figured out the point of joining the h2g2 orchestra or choir on a site that won't even let one upload MIDI files. It didn't seem possible to campaign for that feature without first joining the site though!

My cats are perfectly physical, not virtual and in Luxembourg so no need to worry.

I don't think there's a point to joining the orchestra, but it does let peope know if you play an instrument. Anyway, you never know what the BBC might choose to do with us researchers. Do you play any instruments?

Yes. I play quite a lot of instruments and also have a fairly unusual voice range (SATB). When I was in several orchestras simultaneously that happened to perform together at a concert, I had to keep changing seats in between pieces to pick up the right instrument at the right desk. All very silly, but then most things about me are pretty weird! smiley - biggrin

if you want to report a bug, you should do it here: A388361
you might want to check the other conversations on that page to make sure it hasn't already been reported smiley - ok

Thanks Clelba. I'd had a quick look for techy bugs using h2g2 search and didn't find anything matching, but failed to engage any enthusiasm for actually posting. I must try harder to get one... smiley - winkeye

When someone wakes up again, can they please tell me whether my hand-crafted anti-aliased circle is going to be good enough - as that clearly seems to be the main issue round here [deliberate puns]? I've created a special h2g2 test area on my main web-site and put a link to it from my personal space here (bottom of page).

It's very close, just a bit flat on the extremities.

Flat? That's interesting since I calculated it precisely on a 45 pixel radius (to make 90x90). So presumably the other circles are slightly less than r=45. I can always do the construction again for a slightly smaller radius - though it will take more than a minute!

Have you got a direct link? I might have been looking in the wrong place, but I couldn't find a link to h2g2 on your website. smiley - erm
If I get time I'll come and give you the 'official' test later on this afternoon. smiley - ok

The link is called "h2g2 stuff" and is under the sub-header "Links to my external site" near the bottom of the introduction section of my personal space. I just tested it again and it still works for me. smiley - erm

Are we now redefining Monday to be Tuesday in the same way as Thursday is going to be replaced because some people can't get the hang of it? I suppose I could have lost the hang of calendars altogether now (not unheard of)? Perhaps you are keen to get away for xmas, Mina? Then again, maybe you are just another exceptionally nice italic! Jim has already been subverting h2g2 on my behalf. smiley - smiley

It's mainly because I'm on a three day week this week. Hurrah! smiley - biggrin

I'll have to have a look a later, I've got a huge email backlog and I haven't got time to poke around Personal Spaces at the moment. smiley - ok

I'm just going off to pick some entries, and then I'll be back with your test. smiley - ok
