Thanks Count Zero but I had something like this in mind

Crude I know but you get the idea everything in one plase including those who do the work

Bob, you might find these links useful.
The Community Consortium - A80173361 - is the central page for the Consortium and all the really useful links are at the top of the page
The Interim Committee - A80625521 - names and shames the poor fools who are actively working on bidding for the site
The Interim Committee Updates are posted here - F20154027?thread=8031760&latest=1
Magrathea's Workshop - U14791015 - ie the central point for the discussions of the changes we think are needed and if you add Magrathea's Workshop as a Friend you'll get the latest announcements about these discussions as journal entries
The main output from Magrathea's Workshop is the Great Big Document. It's more than a little bit corporate I'm afraid, but it describes how a community-run site would work and sumarises the discussions here that go back 10 years in some cases. It's not complete yet, but you can see the overall structure in its contents page and it's updated most nights.
Status Update (of the Great Big Document) - F20484620?thread=8120114&latest=1 - is the thread giving the latest link to the GBD, and describing the most recent additions.
It looks insanely complicated because it IS insanely complicated! But !

>> I'm really proud of the excellent curation and audience relationships
Excellent curation, indeed. A crack team of curators is curating all that content right out the door.
AB, thanks by the way for sharing those links to the time tunnel site and the WWII site. Seeing that last one was especially poignant. We're going to be okay, many of us are relatively young and tech-savvy. Most of the people who shared their personal memories of WWII are not so young and in many cases, not even alive. I hope there is a British equivalent of the Library of Congress or StoryCorp to preserve these histories.

The WWII site was shut down far too soon. I went to a chiropody appointment and saw that they had just put up an A4 poster asking people to contribute to it - two weeks after the BBC closed it down. Apparently the clinic had got the poster in the mail two weeks earlier (i.e. just as it was closed) and had taken that long to put it up.
I can't understand the logic behind this - the shutdown was well trailed. I can only assume that someone thought "We've paid to have these posters made; might as well send them out."

There's still memoryshare, going back to 1900 though it's not quite the same.

I realize I am only tenuously related to any of you British people by virtue of speaking the same language. But this is YOUR HISTORY. It makes me weep to think you might lose it. If I can do anything to help you protect the stories of your people, please tell me.

We are h2g2 - Hitch Hikers Guide to the Galaxy.
Ben and the consortium are going a wonderful job of trying to save us and keep us all together. However we are hitchhikers why can't we come together and hitch a ride round the internet using Twitter and Blogspot or any other means of transport.
Isn't that what Douglas Adams dreamed of ?

I don't know how may, AB, but quite a few. In the first few days, we wanted to get the word out there in the wider web. Of course, in the first few days, we didn't know quite what BBC meant by disposal. I'm glad that for us at least, it means sale.
Did you see this one?

It sort of has been happening, not exactly in a 'come together' way but more as an expression of how individual researchers feel about the site.
