A Conversation for The Manifesto for the Campaign to rename Thursday, "Thing"

Anyone remember "Abolish Tuesdays"?

I have a very clear memory of a comic in the late seventies or early eighties in which one of the cartoonists would regularly smuggle the slogan "Abolish Tuesdays" into his strip, usually as grafitti in the background or something like that.

I also remember they asked him to explain himself on the letters page once. He reckoned that Tuesday was the worst day of the week. On Monday, he reasoned, the weekend was still fresh in your mind and you had new topics of conversation to bring up with your colleages. Wednesday is the midpoint of the week, and you get the feeling of satisfaction that you're getting there, past the pain barrier. Thursday, you know it's Friday tomorrow. Friday, it's the weekend. But poor Tuesday is too far gone into the week to look back at the last weekend, and too early to look forward to the next one.

Anybody know what I'm talking about? What comic was it in? Who was the cartoonist? Any ideas?

Was it "Whoopee and Cheeky" or "WOW!" ? -

I seem to remember a logo for it too - and a campaign for the oppisite, which had the slogan "Don't Abolish our Tuesdays".

I remember this particular cartoonist used to put a lot of irrelevant stuff into his work. I recall once, for no apparent reason, Dr. Hook - the dodgey 70's slushy crooning idol - was walking bye in the foreground of the frame, just on front of the action taking place with the main carachters.

As a kid, my head was melted by this stuff. I think I remember my friends being into the "Abolish Tuesdays" slogan too.

Ummm... wasn't it in Whizzer (later Whizzer and Chips)? I seem to remember it being in one of the strips in that, though I can't for the life of me remember which one.

It's highly likely that this guy was a freelance cartoonist and worked for many publications, or indeed for one company that published many comics. Maybe if someone found some of this "abolish tuesdays" stuff on the internet, they could post a link.

For the record, I am very happy.

The Abolish Tuesdays Campaign was in Disc magazine, and the cartoonist was The World Famous Underpaid Cartoonist J. Edward Oliver.
