The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy Foundation (A87756547) is pleased to start the New Year by announcing that it has completed the process of becoming a UK registered charity through the Charity Commission (Registered Charity No: 1149839).
We are also on the verge of making our first donations to four very interesting charities:
· Robin Baker’s Orphan Children’s Home in Andhra Pradesh, India.
www.robinbakersorphanchildrenshome.org/
· Bana Ba Letsatsi in Maun, Northern Botswana.
http://www.banabaletsatsi.org/
· Shine a Light in Latin America.

· Southwark Day Centres for Asylum Seekers in London, UK.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask the h2g2 community representative to the Foundation, Solnushka (U138596), and if you have any suggestions for future charities for the Foundation to support, we are interested in hearing about them too.

If you want a charity in the US, I highly recommend http://cota.org/ the Children's Organ Transplant Association.

I made some mistake with the link to the page: A87756547
It describes what types of charities the Foundation aims to support

and congrats to all the hard workers!
Now, some bright maths genius figure out how that charity registration number comes out to 42.

You might also consider K.I.N.D. That stands for Kids In Need of Desks, which I think relates to literacy. It was founded by Lawrence O'Donnell through UNICEF and funds local artisans in Mali who manufacture school desks. Before this charity got rolling, schoolchildren in Mali had to sit on the floor all day.
The fund is now also bankrolling scholarships for girls.

I'm having trouble finding a clean description of the fund that isn't part of MSNBC. I'll have to let you google it.

I'm sure you'll be happy to support MMF's letter box campaign.

Good idea TC.
Charity begins at home they say.
Seriously.
I have to admit my eyes glaze over at the idea
of some other strange charities about which I
know less than nothing - but MMF's mailbox run
is much closer to home and has a hootoo touch.

It is good news, isn't it? We'll be able to give y'all even more details of the specific projects involved as the donations go forward and we set up our own website and such.
I'll be dropping by those who have suggested charities to seek out more info. The final decision does rest with the Board, but the Board is very keen for the personal touch in recommendations, 'one degree of separation' to totally steal the Kevin Bacon meme. Or is that a trope?. People recommending charities they, or someone they trust, are involved with or have some special knowledge of in in some way.
There does have to be some kind of literacy/ communication skills connection, and we are looking for small charities as you can see from our initial choices, but hey, the more ideas the better really.
And to reiterate, any questions, do please ask.

Ohh, Sol's appeared, i can ask my question before she flees
What's an initial estimate for how much we think the foundation will raise in a year? And is it being raised by merchandise? Or by selling 2legs?
