balance. moderation. variety. that's What humans need to survive. What they don't need is faddy diets, mixed with processed crap and constant eating out rubbish, and what they most certianly don't require, is so many calories a day, that they give themselves a size that won't fit in seats or through doorways, and which gives them arthritic joints. All the otter miniscule aspects of minuti importance, about vague poorly understood notions of very specific nutrients, is really rather irrelivent, for the most part... Seeing as how the vast majority of the population don't even seem capible to stop eatin gwhen they're full... the rest of it; portions of fruit and veg a day, exactly amounts of this, that or the otter to eat, is all a bit irrelivent really... surely... smiley - sigh Its so simples. or not... apprently smiley - headhurts

Today I ate, in no particular odder, and no idea how healthy it might be, but it seemed to work for today.

2 homemade multigrain rolls.
butter.
2 eggs fried in rapeseed oil, and butter, and 2 rashers butchers bacon (its basically non-shrink bacon, so I guess sod all fat).
1 roll, the same, with butter, and cheese.
2 rolls, with butter, HP sauce, and two homemade beef burgers (less than 4% fat, beef, from butchers, 1/3 weight of burgers was the onion, garlic, herbs, chilli peppers, etc I put in em), plus melted cheese).
1 litre coffee, and about 6 pints water, plus, so far, 45 pints guiness. smiley - stout oh, and about 14 cigarettes. smiley - zen i'll have fresh fish tomorrow night, and the following two nights, once with spuds, and twice with wild rice pilaf ( with veg). I might drink booze once more this week, or not... if not, then I might not drink anything for about a fortnight, as I'm going away shortly after... smiley - alienfrownsmiley - erm I'm averaging weight loss still, month by month smiley - zensmiley - weird and I don't go to no gym and do 'exercise' smiley - laughsmiley - blushsmiley - alienfrown Must eat more veg though... its just a bit tricky, sometimes, cooking for one, to do so, whilst trying not to generate too much waste smiley - weird

That probably depends on the individual. I doubt that anyone is ever too old to develop a taste for a new food, or a fondness for a food that was once hated. I've always hated Brussels sprouts, but my sister-in-law developed a delicious recipe for them. I hate turnips, too, until I found a delicious recipe for them. I think there is always hope. smiley - smiley

Àbsolutely! and it doesn't have to be a 'perminant' thing either... I became an absolute chocolate addict... for about two months or so, very recently... and then... with a simular 'no warning' just stopped... smiley - weird back to the more 'typical' (for me) savory diet smiley - blushsmiley - porkpiesmiley - hotdogsmiley - burger IN a few weeks, if teh weather continues like this, I'll just about stop eating red meat, and switch to chicken, instead, and simularly give up sausages, and pierogi, and switch to romaine lettuce, cucumber, celery, ceaser dressing, plenty* of grated cheeses (mainly cheddars), chicken, bits of smokeds salmon, and probably even more bread than currently..... I'll pretty much then live of that, and no much variation (well bits of bulghur wheat, and pasta, and stuff might feature), until autumn then comes about again... and it'll be beef stew and dumplings, cottage pie, shepards pie, tode in the hole, etc., for a few months... smiley - laugh gona try doing more salads with fish, this summer though, now I've found somehwere, the visiting stall, in the city, that actually sells fish worth eating smiley - zensmiley - fish Oh, and I must reinvestigate the lushiousness that is quiche, even though that means I'll definatly have to throw something out, to make enough space to buy a couple more quiche tins (otterwise its a waste of time, making just one quiche at a time...) smiley - blushsmiley - flansmiley - erm ok... now I've enitrely forgot what we're talking about smiley - snork <drool but I do want quiche, now, for supper smiley - snorksmiley - flan

I eat a large range of vegetables.

Processed vegetables.

That is, vegetables that have been processed into meat.

It is horrid because the girl I have been too Dentish to ask out can't decide if she is vegetarian or not, so I can't find a good place to take her out to that caters to both! Why are people so confusing would be a good topic for a conversation, I think!smiley - erm

Geoff, most places have a vegetarian option, surely! Sounds like you're just making excuses.

Why not ask her out but get her to choose the venue?

The whole "humans needing animal gelatin" has been debunked as nonsense. Humans don't need it to survive, but it does help break down the toxins we consume when we eat meat.

So simply: humans that eat meat need gelatin, vegetarians don't.

Being exclusively one thing or another takes a lot of energy and effort that might be better used on finding healthier ingredients or more delicious recipes. Perhaps a billion people enjoy hummus -- many of them make it themselves -- but they don't justify it because it's vegan. They just like the way it tastes.

If everyone was vegetarian, that might be enough to prevent the global warming we're experiencing at the moment. Farming of animals is one of the major sources of greenhouse gases.

I think that you British have quite a lot of antioxidants, even if you don´t eat many vegs and fruits. I envy your love for ginger. It´s a great plant that you consume a lot, isn´t it? at least far more than here.

Also, you use lots of spices in your meals. They also contain lots of antioxidants and minerals.

and tea!! you have tons of it! again , antioxidants a-plenty.

and nuts... full of nutrients. So do not suffer so much!

could have been seven... if you had enough of it smiley - laugh I've not a clue what actually 'constitutes' a 'portion'... I had a big pile of boiled new potatos tonight, and a decent 2 or 3 or more TBSP coleslaugh, plus, oh, a 1 1.7 or 1.8 inch diameter piece of cucumber, about 3 inchs long, to accompany my baked halibut... that must* be a healthy meal (especially if I fail to say how much butter went onto the halibut during cooking, or was spread liberally over the new potatos on the plate) smiley - blush hmm cucumber, 1, colslaugh 2, potatos 3? or don't it work that way? smiley - laugh < smiley - weird

The roll I had at lunchtime, had two differnt err, no, actually three differnt types of flour in it, so that must be like 3 portions of veg, don't know what the herbs and seeds it had add up to though smiley - silly

According to the Metro today, salad & veg are better than fruit. That's good news for me as I'm not much of a fruit eater but I like veg.
Local paper reckons a banana is 2 portions, also veg soup ( doesn't specify how much soup). But of course, like fruit juice, you can't count too much liquid as daily portions because its the fibre you're supposed to have too.
I reckon 7 portions a day would have some unfortunate digestive consequences......

Peanut

Potatoes aren't counted in the five a day campaign because they are counted as a starchy component of our diets/meals.

You can count other things towards your five like swede, turnip, parsnip as these are generally additional to the starchy component of a meal
