...I think I survived...
*checks all his bits*
those nice people from the bbc went in and changed my erroneously entered birthdate of 1853 to something a little more contemporary and everything went smoothly...i think.
'Course, had to change the tag a bit, took a few goes...

I've been to Liverpool in my lorry driving days; once I held up the city by refusing to move through the tunnel because they asked for money and on another occasion I pulled off the main road to have a break and a kid painted my wheel blue while I watched.
You don't want to know about it cos I can talk for ages.

That is some kind of place; Birkenhead. Who would want to make a tunnel to there, Liverpool is not bad but there. I spose somebody likes it.

I fell asleep last night, still logged in. Woke up this morning and needed to sign in again. Have we always had a time out meter on this site or is this a new 'thingy' that we've now acquired?

I don't know about that, but there is definitely a time-out meter now on the sign-in page. I opened it the other day, then had to do something else before I could fill it in and sign in and when I eventually did, I was told my session had expired and I wasn't signed in.

Ah, Birkenhead - 'The One-Eyed City'. So called because 'There's only one i in Birkenhead, la.' (Actually it's because of the common injury in Cammell Lairds whereby a 'rivet catcher' would take a lump of molen metal in the eye. )
At primary school, a student teacher used to patronise us with 'The Gospel in Scouse'. Matthew Levi was the guy who took the Mersey Tunnel toll. The actual toll takers were less...apostolic. A while back a scam was uncovered whereby they were pocketing holf the tolls. They were rumbled because one of them was riding around in a Ferrari.

I have noticed that when I am logged into H2G2 and then go to the BBC Have Your Say page and sign in I have to enter my name and password again. Previously, if one was signed in on Hootoo and clicked the sign in button on HYS it automatically logged you in as it saw you were already logged into the system.
Hence, the new sign-in system isn;t as clever as the old system.

I survived the changeover, but I think one of the wheels is square on this coach.
I elect to not have the sign in window remember me.
When I open my browser and sign in, I'm taken to a hootoo page that asks whether I'm trying to sign in or register. I just hit the my space button and have a normal session from there on in.
If I go to some other website and then come back here without closing the browser, I have to sign in again. When I hit the sign in button, I am taken to my settings page. The only way forward from here is to hit the big "Explore the BBC" button and drill down to the h2g2 front page. The system does know who I am and "my space" takes me where it ought to.
Under the previous system, SSO remembered me for as long as the browser was open even if I navigated to some other non-beeb site.
Here's another strangeness. I wanted to talk about the new sign on and looked on the front page for an appropriate thread. This thread was listed, so I clicked on it and was taken to some other thread in the same forum. Found the right thread and was reading the backlog when my connection went flaky.
Recovered connection, found hootoo front page, clicked on the thread named "I survived BBC id" and was dumped in the wrong thread... but it was a different wrong thread from the previous event.
I respectfully suggest that the techies have not properly hooked up the infinite improbability drive.

Presumably in Opera you can gt round he sign-out timer by getting it to automatically reload the page every so many minutes

Am I the only one who's annoyed with the new white box that displays your username in Alabaster? I liked the blue one from before; is there any way to get the blue one back? Or at least make the white one invisible? It's really grating for some reason.
