Now if I were a moderator here this lovers tiff would have been expunged and the two protagonists would be on pre mod...but that would be how I handled it...I can't think of a faster way of sending a message to those who will not behave in an adult manner in a public forum.

I cannot believe that anyone has been banned from h2g2 on a whim..the moderation here is positively laid back compared to other sites who try to allow adult conversations whilst dealing with those who hate free speech or those who think anything goes.It is not easy being a moderator..it really isn't as anyone here can attest to IF they have ever moderated a website.

I actually think that the TPTB here do a very good job within the limitations set on them and the lack of numbers to be everywhere on the site. smiley - ok

I'm sure I'm not the only one who finds personal spats disruptive and uninteresting.

I know from personal experience how hard it can be to let the 'other person' have the last word, especially if you consider that word to be untrue and abusive/slanderous.

Perhaps the answer is to adapt an idea of SoRB's:
What you have written is obviously untrue. It's equally obvious you won't change your opinion. I therefore have no further interest in continuing this conversation with you.

That way you get to keep the moral high ground *and* the thread doesn't get derailed.

The thread may even improve without those who despise others having a differing opinion.smiley - erm

Trouble is that those taking the high moral ground and leaving can't always stay away.. smiley - biggrin

Yes, the number one rule of unsubscribing is that you should never come back.

There is of course 'the dumb bomb' created when Della would do everything to derail threads by putting up comments that *had* to be confronted but would dereail a thread. Hence, the dumb bomb was created as a way of highlighting the comments but replying in a way that was relatively non-attacking.

In the Dumb Bomb entry, the first three examples of places where you could use a Dumb Bomb are in fact ones where you should report the posting to the moderators.

The thing is that we try not to yikes as we prefer to keep things up and broach the issue with discussion.

Yiksing hides the posts which allows the 'perp' to deny all knowledge.

It's a catch-22 situation. Yiksing would alert the eds to a person but yiksing sort of goes against how we prefer to work on this site. Yiksing is a requirement for running such a site. It isn't a requirement for contributing to the site but is needed in some cases.

The top 3 of the dumb bomb list can be sorted out by discussion.

3Dots, we have been asked by the Eds to always sort out problems of this sort by reporting ('yikesing') the offending posting, not by reasoning with the poster.

Because if you play a troll's game you NEVER win.You just allow the troll to get bigger and bigger as you feed them and people who MIGHT have contributed to a conversation but really don't feel that passionate, won't bother.

In fact it's the quickest way to drive people away and prevent a reasonable discussion because it just becomes a ding dong, ping pong circular thread.

It's much better to yikes than to play with the troll.

However people who yikes for the sheer fun of it will find no one will speak to them eventually.smiley - winkeye

But it's not always trolling thats the point. What we would call sub-trolling...not trolling but discussing in such away that it can derail threads.

Either the posting breaks the house rules, in which case you really should yikes it, or it doesn't, in which case you shouldn't. It's as simple as that.

There's no requirement that you admit that you have yikesed a posting - you can remain anonymous if you wish.

Well the discu....errr arguments will be making those of us who hate such scenes just not bother to post.

I avoided all the Della rubbish and any other wars for that reason. Not that what I would have said would have been that incitefull but it does narrow down the convo's to just a few who can be bothered.

You must remember that hootoo is for all, not just the few that thrive on conflict.

Besides which the spat that occurred earlier in this thread added NOTHING to the thread. It was a squabble and an unedifying one at that.

It's probably better to respect the Eds request in this matter or face their annoyance... smiley - winkeye

I just unsub. Once a thread has got to that stage, it rarely recovers to decent discussion unless the topic was something that hadn't already been done to death on here.
Perhaps I should stick around and Yikes where appropriate, but I don't want to - I'd get angry, and I don't come here to be angry.

Exactly!

Yikes the posts and be done with it..Stop the bullies and the trolls and the childish behaviour.

Mind I do think that there should be a comeuppance for those who frivolously yikes threads though.smiley - winkeye

The best way to deal with a troll is to starve it. The Dellas of this world (and some are still here) are best ignored. The Dumb Bomb was the second best option, and really only useful (or used by) those who just couldn't help themselves.
